Requirements
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and successful completion of an accredited program for Licensed Practical Nursing are required.
- A Licensed Practical Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required by the end of the core orientation period.
- The employee must demonstrate clinical competencies required to perform LPN functions within approximately three months of general orientation.
- The employee must be able to move and respond quickly to emergency situations.
- The employee must be able to input and retrieve data from computerized systems.
- The employee must be able to rotate within the service line and related service areas.
- The employee must communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and all members of the care delivery team.
- The role requires considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assisting with lifting and moving patients.
- The role requires sustained hand-eye coordination and the ability to assume fatiguing physical positions and motions.
Responsibilities
- Provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services within the scope of practical nursing under RN supervision.
- Assist the Registered Nurse with collecting data, accompanying patients, and responding to patient and family requests.
- Pass medications and administer intravenous therapy as permitted by scope of practice.
- Admit patients to the emergency department and complete preparation tasks.
- Coordinate with the charge nurse when patient needs exceed the LPN scope of practice or when census and acuity are high.
- Document data gathered, care provided, and interventions performed by the healthcare team.
- Communicate patient status to the physician and Registered Nurse.
- Maintain patient flow through the care area.
- Implement skilled technical care and appropriate protocols within the limits of the LPN license and physician orders.
- Respond to call lights and monitor alarms while assisting patients and families.
- Collect and record patient data, including intake and output, weight, vital signs, calorie counts, and demographic information.
- Manage intravenous fluids and medication administration.
- Administer specified medications orally or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, and document the time and amount in patient charts.
- Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel.
- Dress wounds; administer enemas, douches, alcohol rubs, and massages; apply compresses, ice bags, and hot water bottles.
- Bathe, dress, and assist patients with walking and turning.
- Collect urine, blood, sputum, and other patient samples for testing.
- Prepare or examine food trays for prescribed diets and feed patients.
- Wash and dress deceased persons.
- Assist with the delivery, care, and feeding of infants.
- Assemble and use equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies.
- Sterilize equipment and supplies.
- Inventory and requisition supplies.
- Use computerized systems to obtain supplies and enter patient data.
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
- Provide patient teaching materials based on identified needs and care guidelines, coordinating with physicians and Registered Nurses and documenting the education.
- Follow the discharge process and assist patients with appointments for further care and follow-up.
- Complete entries in the ExpressCare log for each patient.
- Participate appropriately and effectively as a member of the healthcare team.
- Develop and work toward yearly professional goals and objectives.
- Meet organizational obligations professionally.
- Precept new employees and students in the unit.
- Communicate with the Registered Nurse about patient status, interventions, collected data, and other information needed for care planning.
