JOB TITLE:   

Assistant Professor - Computational Biochemist

The Department of Molecular Biology (MOLB) and the School of Computing (SoC) at the University of Wyoming seeks candidates for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in the fall of 2026 working in computational biochemistry. Ideal candidates will have expertise in molecular, biochemical, cellular, or structural biology and their research will involve developing or making advanced use of computation, AI, machine learning, and/or large language model approaches. Tenure home will be in MOLB with a joint appointment in the newly formed SoC as appropriate for the candidate’s interest and experience.

The Department of Molecular Biology is a research-intensive academic unit in the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences, & Natural Resources with broad expertise in biochemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, and microbiology (http://www.uwyo.edu/molecbio/). Faculty within Molecular Biology participate in rigorous interdisciplinary and departmental graduate programs (http://www.uwyo.edu/molecbio/degree-programs/), have a strong track record of securing extramural funding, and value training the next generation of scientists. The core of the department is housed within the new Science Initiative Building, which houses several Research Centers, fosters scientific education and outreach, and provides access to shared research core facilities, including the Center for Advanced Scientific Instrumentation (CASI), in addition to animal husbandry and greenhouse spaces.

The School of Computing is an independent academic unit that was established in 2022 with a focus on applied computing in and across all disciplines, and on delivering new academic programs that provide students with important computing and digital skills (https://www.uwyo.edu/soc/). Most SoC faculty have joint appointments with other academic units or programs, so that research areas span varied applications including astrophysics, animal behavior, atmospheric science, archaeology, hydrology, mathematics and computer science. The University of Wyoming has significant resources to support research computing and data science, including a long-term collaboration with the NCAR Wyoming Supercomputer Center through which a significant fraction of resources is reserved exclusively for UW use.

The qualified candidate is expected to develop a productive, extramurally funded interdisciplinary research program in biochemistry and computing. The candidate is also expected to have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and participate in teaching within the core MOLB/SoC Molecular Biology and computing curriculum.

WORK LOCATION: 

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Doctorate degree in an appropriate field and at least two years of postdoctoral research experience.
• Research standing as demonstrated by number and quality of publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or other relevant research impact (e.g., peer-reviewed datasets, scientific software, or other complementary assessments of impact and influence).
• Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Experience and/or demonstrated potential to develop an externally funded research program in an area with potential for significant and sustained funding.
• Interdisciplinary interests and/or experience that intersect and bridge multiple academic department/s. 
• Experience and interest in teaching, training, and/or mentoring students in relevant disciplines, including but not limited to computing, biochemistry, molecular, and cellular life sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
