Requirements
  • Two years of experience performing semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry repairs.
  • Working knowledge of card key door locks and their operating systems, including the ability to use a portable programmer to find and solve problems.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing fixtures and procedures; basic electrical theory and wiring; 120/208-volt electrical systems; low-voltage 12/24-volt electrical systems; and mechanical equipment including motors, fans, heaters, air conditioners, and controls.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English sufficiently to carry out job duties and communicate, and ability to read and understand applicable policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand architectural plans and specifications.
  • Ability to select appropriate tools and use them properly and safely, including hand and power tools standard to maintenance and construction trades.
  • Ability to work independently, follow through on assignments with minimal supervision, prioritize assignments, and adjust to changing workloads or competing deadlines.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and safe working practices.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with staff, management, students, residents, guests, and contractors.
  • Experience with basic computer software, including Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Basic mathematics skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, and area calculations.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights and weekends, and work overtime including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to stand, walk, crawl, climb, stoop, push, pull, and crouch for extended periods; repeatedly handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds; work on ladders; work in dirty, noisy, wet, humid, fluctuating, or extreme conditions; and distinguish different colors.
  • Ability to drive a truck and/or electrical cart.
  • Valid California noncommercial Class C driver's license upon hire and maintenance of the license.
  • Satisfactory background investigation, Live Scan background check, pre-placement physical examination, satisfactory driving record, color vision testing, and back-lifting examination.
Responsibilities
  • Install, remove, diagnose, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on various parts, equipment, and assemblies.
  • Provide facilities maintenance support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services.
  • Perform semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry maintenance tasks, along with work involving doors and windows, building hardware, appliances, floor and ceiling systems, roofing, and basic construction methods.
  • Prepare forms and paperwork associated with assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Operate a personal computer and drive a car or small truck as required for job duties.
  • Work varying and sometimes extended hours under difficult conditions.
