The US automotive retail industry is rapidly consolidating as small family-owned dealerships are absorbed by mega-retailers, driven by the need for scale to remain competitive. Derek Sylvester recently sold his family's Pennsylvania Chevrolet dealership, established in 1972, to New York-based Matthews Auto Group. The top 150 dealers now control 27% of all new vehicle sales, up from 21.2% in 2015, according to Automotive News. Publicly traded giants like Lithia Motors and AutoNation have reached market caps exceeding $6 billion each. Industry experts cite growing pressures from electric vehicle adoption, technological shifts and increased automaker demands as factors pushing smaller dealers to sell. Whilst 90.5% of dealers own five stores or fewer, the fastest growth is amongst medium-sized groups with six to 25 locations. Merger and acquisition activity is expected to accelerate further this year.
