  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience, including data entry and specimen handling, is required.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to operate hospital, laboratory information, patient information, and office software systems are required.
  • Working knowledge of specimen requirements, including serum, plasma, whole blood, tissue, and body fluids, is required.
  • Knowledge of specimen collection containers and media is required.
  • The ability to recognize problems, identify causes, take corrective action, and exercise independent judgment is required.
  • English speaking, reading, and writing proficiency sufficient to perform essential job functions is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy and specialized specimen collection procedures for inpatient and outpatient patients, from routine to advanced functions.
  • Process, organize, label, and transport biological specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Enter and extract data using the Laboratory Information System and perform related patient information system functions.
  • Provide patient care while independently handling patient care and technical issues within the scope of the role.
  • Serve as a role model, preceptor, and escalation support for less experienced staff and students.
  • Answer phones, fax laboratory reports, and perform other clerical tasks as needed.
  • Register patients and order tests according to requisitions when needed.
  • File requisitions, reports, and pathology materials appropriately.
  • Handle STAT samples expediently and perform special collections and procedures according to competencies and policies.
  • Resolve complex problems and workflow issues, notifying management of issues and resolutions when appropriate.
  • Perform and document daily check-off duties and restock assigned work areas.
  • Verify patient identity using two identifiers and label specimens accurately.
  • Investigate and resolve requisition and specimen-labeling discrepancies, escalating issues when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment and follow safety, hazardous materials, security, and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Adjust work schedules to accommodate departmental needs and use the time-recording system appropriately.
  • Use department resources, equipment, and supplies properly and efficiently.
  • Guide and mentor section employees and students.
  • Participate in departmental projects and pursue continuing education opportunities.
  • Be available for on-call work during emergencies as required.
  • Travel within or outside the Houston metropolitan area as required by the department.
Desired Qualifications
  • A course in phlebotomy or venipuncture is preferred.
  • Neonatal or pediatric phlebotomy experience is preferred.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification from ACA, AMT, or NCCT is preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Technician certification from ASCP is preferred.
