Term: 3 months minimum. 6 months maximum. May or June 2024 start preferred.
General Description:
Supplement your education with real-world experience through an internship that encourages you to explore multiple facets of mechanical engineering in a single role from hardware design, to detailed analyses, hands-on testing, and work on pioneering technologies in a mission focused environment. Our Mechanical Products team is seeking a Summer Intern to help develop state of the art low noise cryogenic systems in support of advancing HRL’s world-leading silicon quantum dot technologies. In this role, the candidate will join a diverse team of engineers and scientists to progress the mechanical design of cryogenic test systems, perform complex thermal analyses, and conduct experimental tests to inform design decisions.
Essential Duties:
Design mechanical hardware, create drawings for machining, and develop system assembly instructions.
Analyze the thermal and dynamic performance of novel cryogenic systems.
Develop and execute low temperature tests to validate analyses and inform design decisions.
Integrate and validate system hardware in a laboratory environment.
Present progress and key findings in design reviews and team meetings.
Required Skills
Experience with (or a curiosity to learn) mechanical hardware design (e.g. Solidworks), finite element analysis (e.g. Ansys, COMSOL), programming languages (e.g. Python, Matlab), and hands-on testing is desired.
Experience in a university research lab, national lab, or industrial research and development company is a plus.
Required Education:
Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline. Coursework covering mechanical design and heat transfer is desired.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be sufficiently mobile, have visual and hearing acuity, and manual dexterity to safely work within a laboratory environment.
Special Requirements:
