What if... We could harness the power of Flagship’s scientific platforms and create novel treatment options that benefit more patients, sooner?
Pioneering Medicines, an initiative of Flagship Pioneering, is building a world-class biopharmaceutical R&D capability focused on conceiving and developing life-changing treatments for patients by harnessing the power of Flagship’s scientific platforms and applying those innovative approaches to serious diseases with unmet medical need. Unique to Pioneering Medicines’ approach is the opportunity to combine platforms to create truly novel and potentially transformative treatments.
About Flagship Pioneering:
Flagship Pioneering conceives, creates, resources, and develops first-in-category life science platform companies to transform human health and sustainability. Since its founding in 2000, the firm has originated and fostered the development of more than 100 scientific ventures, resulting in over $34 billion in aggregate value, 500+ issued patents, and more than 50 clinical trials for novel therapeutic agents.
Position Summary:
Are you a goal-driven, innovative and team-orientated research scientist with passion in bringing transformative medicines to patients? Pioneering Medicines encourages you to join our Translational Sciences team!
The ideal candidate will have a depth and breadth of experience in delivering impactful biology data that can shape the directions of drug discovery and/or early clinical programs; demonstrate expertise and good understanding of laboratory techniques and fit-for-purpose assay development to tackle biological and translational science questions. You will serve as a lab-based leader within a newly forming Translational Sciences team. This role will encompass a diversity of activities that are envisaged to evolve along with the progress of a portfolio of discovery programs. The primary deliverables will involve generation of impactful translational datasets that shape program directions across a range of biology mechanisms and therapeutic modalities; contribute to capability building to enable translational studies. There will also be significant opportunity to partner with lab managers and operations leads to build the lab infrastructure, to mentor and support junior lab members, to lead external research activities performed at CROs or with collaborators, and to contribute to the strategic and scientific direction of the Translational Sciences team. You will have the opportunity to learn, grow and excel in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment, partnering with adjacent discovery/development functions to deliver decision-enabling data, facilitate seamless transfers of protocols, assays and datasets. We are looking for adaptive, open-minded and scientifically curious individuals who embrace our core values of putting people and patients first, in an environment that encourages growth, diversity, creativity, and learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize a depth and breadth of scientific expertise to deliver impactful datasets that inform and shape the translational direction of discovery programs (e.g. primary cultures, iPSC-derived models and/or 3D organoid systems, PD biomarker discovery, novel biomarker assay PoC, patient selection).
- Co-ordinate external research activities at CROs or with collaboration partners.
- Contribute insights and solutions to establish fit-for-purpose research capabilities.
- Partner with drug discovery/clinical functions to facilitate transfer of assays, reagents, protocols and/or datasets.
- Maintain experimental records in an ELN and contribute to the writing of regulatory and/or scientific documents as necessary.
- Contribute to the scientific evolution of the Translational Sciences team and other prioritized activities and initiatives within the drug discovery group; mentor/coach/train junior lab-based team members.
Experience and Education Required:
- An MSc degree (or equivalent) in biology or a related scientific area, with 5+ years of additional research experience; or PhD degree with 2+ years of research experience.
- Demonstrate technical expertise leveraging cellular, molecular and/or immunological techniques (including but not limited to qPCR, ELISA, MSD, flow cytometry, histology, WB, primary cell or iPSC cultures, and microtissue/organoid models).
- Experience leveraging a variety of complex in vitro/ex vivo models (e.g. ex vivo stimulation of immune cells; compound characterization in 3D organoids). Ability to work with preclinical model systems and bridge to human assays will be essential.
- Demonstrate scientific expertise that is directly related to 1 or more of the following areas: cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, immunological/inflammatory, genetic diseases.
