Requirements
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Anesthetist) in West Virginia.
  • Board certification or recertification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Two years of experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
  • Competence in all anesthetic cases provided.
  • Leadership qualities and professionalism.

Responsibilities
  • Provide anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and according to department and hospital policies.
  • Administer anesthesia and monitor patients’ physical responses to sedatives, analgesics, anesthetic agents, and adjunctive medications.
  • Run the daily Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist staffing board in conjunction with the manager and/or anesthesiologist.
  • Supervise a delegated subset of employees.
  • Foster Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist development through goal setting, team building, continuing education, and performance management.
  • Maintain competence in airway management and use of airway adjuncts, including Bullard laryngoscopes, fiberoptic scopes, and intubating laryngeal mask airways.
  • Take precautions to minimize infection risks for patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in pre-anesthetic evaluations and select anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Insert intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters according to protocol, administer analgesic blocks, perform endotracheal intubation and extubation, and perform arterial punctures for arterial blood gas interpretation.
  • Manage induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
  • Recognize abnormal patient responses, initiate corrective measures, determine the need for laboratory tests, provide resuscitative care, and evaluate and manage patients during the immediate postoperative period.
  • Administer intravenous fluids and blood products after obtaining a hematocrit.
  • Document patient status in the anesthesia record.
  • Perform safety and performance checks on anesthesia equipment and verify supplies; procure and assemble equipment when an anesthesia technician is unavailable.
  • Review informed-consent documentation, identify the surgical site during SBAR communication, and participate in the operating-room surgical pause.
  • Communicate with individuals involved in perioperative and postoperative patient care.
  • Teach and evaluate newly hired Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, student registered nurse anesthetists, and medical students in the clinical area.
  • Manage accountability for controlled substances according to department, hospital, state, and federal requirements.
  • Coordinate breaks, lunches, relief order, and case assignments; assess immediate staffing needs with the clinical team.
  • Advise the Director/Manager on staff hiring, retention, interviewing, and recruitment.
  • Promote cooperative problem-solving, delegation, team building, goal orientation, and staff development through coaching, counseling, staff meetings, and performance appraisals.
  • Conduct ongoing goal setting, peer review, and performance reviews; provide feedback and coach and counsel employees under the direction of the Director/Manager.
  • Review workflows and staffing patterns to support productivity, cost-effective staffing, and appropriate staff utilization and skill mix.
  • Ensure adherence to WVUH and accrediting-body standards and policies for licensure, regulation, and accreditation.
  • Assist leaders with timely follow-up investigations of incident reports.
  • Facilitate professional development and oversee orientation, training, and continuing education for staff and other health-related personnel.
