  • An associate degree is required.
  • A degree from an accredited college offering a National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards-approved Medical Laboratory Technician program or completion of a clinical laboratory training program is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists, or American Association of Bioanalysts is required.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of medical technology is required.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication is required.
  • Ability to multitask, handle stress appropriately, and work in a fast-paced environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory according to established laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Document and report test results in a timely manner according to established laboratory protocols and procedures, verify result accuracy before reporting, and investigate and document problems with unacceptable specimens.
  • Follow established laboratory quality-control procedures, analyze and evaluate quality-control results before accepting and reporting patient test results, and record quality-control testing results as defined in test procedures.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly, or as-needed maintenance on instruments and equipment and calibrate equipment as required.
  • Complete work assignments on time and accept assignments readily.
  • Produce consistent quality results while maintaining a large quantity of work.
  • Meet deadlines and turnaround times for test results and preventive maintenance.
  • Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to maintain a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Ensure standards are met for calibrations, documentation, and related activities.
  • Demonstrate reliability and speed in reporting, specimen processing, and calibrations.
  • Manage the technical aspects of work areas effectively.
  • Work effectively with department and unit teams across departments to support departmental goals and objectives.
  • Support communication, education, orientation, and implementation of C/FCC actions and projects.
  • Act as a resource for test-related issues for technicians, phlebotomists, secretaries, and other medical staff as appropriate.
  • Create a productive work environment regarding expectations, interruptions, and schedules.
  • Accept other assignments requested by the organization.
  • Minimize supply, time, and training costs by following established procedures and performing work correctly the first time.
  • Minimize equipment-repair, repeat-work, and quality-control costs by following established procedures and performing work correctly the first time.
  • Use hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
