Requirements
  • Prior experience working as a switchboard operator is highly preferred.
  • The ability to speak clearly is required.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish ability is preferred.
  • The employee must maintain confidentiality related to job responsibilities.
  • The employee must complete annual safety updates, general and departmental orientation, and assigned work within established time frames.
  • The employee must maintain licensure or certification as appropriate.
Responsibilities
  • Answer hospital phones professionally and accurately transfer incoming calls.
  • Make overhead announcements and operate hospital-wide communications systems, including paging, beeping, emergency equipment, and emergency codes.
  • Assist with computer work and admitting processes.
  • Cross-train to assist as a mailroom clerk.
  • Communicate with the public, patients, employees, medical staff, visitors, and security personnel in a professional, informative, and courteous manner.
  • Stay informed about hospital functions, policies, procedures, and staff changes to answer questions accurately.
  • Operate the security base-station radio and dispatch officers to correct locations.
  • Complete dispatch forms, code and hospital-information log books, and daily HEAR Radio base-station checklists.
  • Report equipment and supply problems to the supervisor and request assistance as appropriate.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service programs.
  • Identify errors, inefficiencies, and departmental problems; suggest and implement improvements.
  • Help control costs or generate revenue while maximizing departmental efficiency and value.
  • Measure progress against quality goals.
