Requirements
  • A Master's degree from an accredited school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education is required.
  • Two to three years of professional social work practice beyond the Master's degree are required, including at least one year of psychiatric emergency, crisis, or outreach work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience working with adult populations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to provide behavioral health assessments, evaluations, and evidence-based interventions are required.
  • A biopsychosocial approach to caring for individuals and families is required.
  • Licensure as a social worker, as defined by the State Board for Social Work, State Education Department, Division of Professional Licensing Services, is required. If licensure has not been obtained upon employment, it must be obtained within 18 months, unless duties are performed under the Office of Mental Health, in which case a limited permit or New York State licensure is required upon employment start.
Responsibilities
  • Provide psychosocial assessments, psychiatric diagnoses, and treatment for patients aged 10 to 21 in an urban school-based clinic.
  • Provide continuous and comprehensive services that promote optimal mental health and support the prevention and treatment of behavioral disorders and health maintenance.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage mental, emotional, behavioral, addictive, and developmental disorders and disabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with onsite medical and mental health providers, community providers, and school personnel.
  • Provide screening, evaluation, individual, family, and group treatment using evidence-based interventions with patients and their families.
  • Perform psychosocial assessments and diagnostic formulations for adolescents, including administering and interpreting tests and measures of psychosocial functioning.
  • Work collaboratively with a physician and/or mental health provider of record to provide comprehensive adolescent behavioral health services to students enrolled in the school-based clinic.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive and individualized treatment plans and refer patients for further care and services within the school clinic, school building, or larger community.
  • Provide social work treatment to patients and families within the school-based health center.
  • Identify learning needs of various populations and contribute to developing educational programs to meet those needs.
  • Document treatment in the electronic medical record in compliance with Division, Department, and Hospital policy.
  • Attend Social Work Division, Social Work in Psychiatry, and program staff meetings.
  • Participate in Social Work and Psychiatry Division activities, including implementing professional-practice, discharge-planning, and patient-care policies and procedures; completing time reporting and other Hospital or Division forms; completing mandatory in-service training and UHS reviews; participating in routine committee processes; and facilitating quality-assurance and staff-development activities.
  • Treat patients, families, trainees, and coworkers sensitively with appropriate attention to cultural differences and participate in available cultural-competency events and training.
  • Identify system-specific problems requiring evaluation or change and work with appropriate staff to resolve them through performance-improvement processes.
  • Provide backup to other units or programs during the absence of coworkers when requested and able.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Prior experience providing individual or group therapy in an acute clinical setting is preferred.
