Requirements
  • High School Graduate required - additional trade school experience desired.
  • Massachusetts 3rd Class Engineer’s license in good standing.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Four years of experience operating boilers with a strong understanding of boiler systems and applicable codes and standards.
  • Understand fundamentals of natural gas and oil combustion, air atomization, low emission technology, spray type deaerators, and water hammer cause and effect.
  • Proficient with MS Word and Excel preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor, collect and document steam, water, air and gas pressures and flows, both locally and through the building management system, to ensure safe and efficient plant operation.
  • Utilize boiler control interfaces to view operating, historical, and diagnostic information.Work to identify abnormalities or deviations between actual values and set points.
  • Adjusting and performing regular maintenance on all campus boilers and pressure reducing stations.
  • Blow down boilers and air receivers as required.
  • Perform chemical analysis of boiler feed water.
  • Operate and maintain water softeners and air compressors.
  • Lubricate all plant equipment as required.
  • Perform routine record keeping of planned and executed preventative maintenance tasks utilizing asset/work management software (Maximo).
  • Keep record of and work from mechanical/electrical drawings, service manuals, and other pertinent engineering and manufacturer’s documents relating to CHP systems and equipment.
  • Perform equipment startups and shutdowns to meet operational needs and required inspections.
  • Use all required tools, testing and measuring equipment including boiler management and control systems.
  • Relay information, assignments, and schedule to others as directed by supervisor or manager.
  • Read, write, understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English.
  • Assume assigned watch with minimum of supervision.
  • Work on ladders and scaffolds and in pits, tanks and drums.
  • Know and use all related safety check procedures.
  • Responsible for keeping Central Heating Plant and campus boiler rooms clean and tidy.
  • Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with supervisors, fellow workers, department heads and other members of the campus community.
  • Work in an environment subject to frequent changing priorities, from individuals and time deadlines.
  • Bend, stoop, lift and move equipment and supplies; shovel snow and remove trash weigh 60 pounds.
  • Work either independently or in a project team setting.
  • Receive and ship packages, parts and supplies.
  • Clean, paint, and refinish equipment.
  • Respond to and clean up after emergencies and disasters.
  • Assist in the security and protection of facilities to include locking and unlocking exterior doors and tool cabinets.
