UBS upgrades Medtronic to Buy as cardiac segment drives 78% revenue growth

UBS upgraded Medtronic to Buy from Neutral, citing an ongoing turnaround at the medical technology company. The upgrade follows Medtronic's strongest annual revenue growth in a decade, with Q4 revenue reaching $9.8 billion, up 6.6% organically, and full-year revenue hitting $36.4 billion, up 5.8% organically. The company's cardiac segment showed particularly strong growth, with Cardiac Ablation Solutions revenue rising 78% globally. New product launches, including Symplicity Spyral for hypertension, which is now annualising at $100 million, are gaining traction. However, analysts caution that several more quarters of consistent execution are needed before the turnaround can be considered complete, given management's multi-year efforts to accelerate growth.

Medtronic and Intuitive Surgical lag market amid sector weakness

Medtronic and Intuitive Surgical, two medical device leaders, have underperformed this year due to sector weakness and company-specific challenges. However, both show potential for recovery. Medtronic's fourth-quarter revenue rose 9.9% to $9.8 billion, though adjusted earnings per share fell 4.3% to $1.55 due to higher costs, including tariffs. The company posted its highest annual revenue growth in a decade, driven partly by its Pulse Field Ablation franchise. Medtronic recently received FDA clearance for its Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system for urologic procedures, positioning it to compete in the underpenetrated robotic surgery market. The company plans to spin off its lower-margin diabetes care division, which should improve margins. With a 3.4% forward dividend yield and 49 consecutive years of payout increases, Medtronic appeals to income-focused investors.

Medtronic's Sphere-9 catheter receives expanded CE Mark for ventricular arrhythmia treatment

Medtronic has received expanded CE Mark approval for its Affera Mapping and Ablation System with Sphere-9 Catheter to treat ventricular arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and premature ventricular complexes. The Sphere-9 catheter is the first all-in-one mapping and ablation, large-tip focal, dual-energy catheter CE marked for ventricular ablation. The US Food and Drug Administration granted Breakthrough Device Designation for the Sphere-9 catheter, providing an expedited regulatory pathway. The Sphere VT pivotal trial is now enrolling patients to support future US approval. The system combines pulsed field and radiofrequency ablation with high-definition mapping in a single catheter. Medtronic says the technology addresses an unmet need in treating ventricular arrhythmias, where outcomes have remained suboptimal with limited recent innovation in ablation tools.

Medtronic launches Simplera Sync Sensor in Korea to simplify diabetes management.

Medtronic launches Simplera Sync Sensor in Korea to simplify diabetes management. Published: 06 Aug 2026 Medtronic has launched its latest continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) tool, the Simplera Sync Sensor, in Korea, increasing sensor options for consumers of its MiniMed 780G automated insulin delivery (AID) system and supporting patients with diabetes to manage their glucose levels more simply. The Simplera Sync Sensor rationalizes insertion in two steps and is about half the size of Medtronic's previous-generation sensor. The novel all-in-one disposable sensor integrates separate components into a single tool, simplifying replacement. It also prevents the requirement for routine fingerstick calibration and additional adhesive tape. In a study of patients with type 1 diabetes who switched from the Guardian 4 Sensor to the Simplera Sync Sensor, participants reported that the novel sensor was simple to insert, thinner, and more convenient to manage. "For patients with type 1 diabetes who require around-the-clock glucose monitoring and insulin delivery, the complexity of sensor replacement can significantly affect long-term treatment adherence," said Dr. Kim Jae-hyun, academic director of the Korean Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and professor of pediatrics at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. "Devices such as the Simplera Sync Sensor, which simplify the user experience, can provide a stronger foundation for more consistent glucose management and better adherence." James Chiang, Vice President and General Manager for MiniMed APAC, said people with type 1 diabetes make countless decisions every day regarding glucose monitoring, insulin dosing, meals, exercise, and sleep. "The MiniMed 780G system together with the Simplera Sync Sensor reduces the daily burden through automation, simplicity, and a more seamless user experience, helping people manage diabetes with less effort," Chiang said. "This reflects MiniMed's mission of making every day better for people living with diabetes." MiniMed is an independent company established following the spin-off of Medtronic's diabetes business. The MiniMed 780G technology automatically adjusts and delivers both basal and correction insulin each five minutes based on glucose readings from the CGM sensor. Equipped with Medtronic's SmartGuard automatic mode, the technology continuously responds to changing glucose levels during the day and night, reducing the need for physical insulin adjustments. Clinical and real-world evidence shows that, when applied with optimal surroundings, the MiniMed 780G system supports consumers in achieving glucose control above the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and international guideline recommendation of 70 % Time in Range (TIR), with many consumers reaching 80 % TIR. In separate real-world research involving 8,019 U.S. MiniMed 780G users aged seven years and older, nighttime TIR reached 91 %. The MiniMed 780G technology received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in April 2023 for people aged seven years and older with Type 1 diabetes. It remains the only insulin pump with automated insulin delivery capability presently available in the Korean market. Existing MiniMed 780G consumer begin applying the Simplera Sync Sensor directly via a software update through the MiniMed Mobile app, enabling them to advantages from the novel sensor without replacing their present pump. According to Towards Healthcare, the medical disposables market is projected to experience significant growth, with estimates suggesting the market size will increase from USD 679.13 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 2198.05 billion by 2035.Growth is expected at a steady CAGR of 13.94% in between 2026 to 2035. Including disposable medical supplies in medical care practices can streamline technology and optimize workflows. The removal of time-consuming sterilization technology frees up significant staff time, allowing healthcare providers to focus on direct patient care. By lowering the load of cleaning and reprocessing tools, disposable products improve overall productivity and effectiveness in healthcare facilities. Disposable medical supplies are intended to be ready for immediate use, removing the requirement for pre-procedural cleaning and sterilization steps. This streamlines technology and enables medical care providers to focus on the task at hand, bringing care more effectively. About Medtronic. Medtronic plc is an American-Irish healthcare tools company. The organization's legal and executive headquarters are in Ireland, while its operational headquarters are in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The organization has developed some world-first technologies since its inception, involving wearable and implantable pacemakers, the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), and online patient monitoring systems. They created miniaturized tools such as the world's smallest pacemaker and spinal cord stimulator. A recent report by Towards Healthcare highlights that the medical disposables market is growing. Disposable healthcare supplies provide significant advantages that enhance patient care and medical care effectiveness. These products play a significant role in safeguarding patient health by preventing the strenth for cross-contamination. Disposable healthcare supplies are instrumental in avoiding the spread of infections. By using single-use products, the challenges of transmitting harmful pathogens between patients are significantly lowered. This sharp focus on hygiene and cleanliness makes a safer environment for both patients and medical care workers. Disposable healthcare supplies encourage aseptic technology, a set of solutions intended to reduce contamination within the healthcare sector. The simplicity and convenience of using disposable products encourage healthcare suppliers to maintain a high standard of hygiene throughout the course of patient care.
