Requirements
  • A track record of original work involving identifying a real problem, developing an approach, and seeing it through.
  • Proficiency in PyTorch or JAX and the ability to implement models cleanly from papers.
  • Fluency in the mathematics, probability, optimization, and linear algebra underlying model behavior.
  • Ability to move between ideas and implementation by building solutions.
  • Clear, precise written and verbal communication.
Responsibilities
  • Identify high-leverage research problems across the voice artificial intelligence stack, from audio understanding to audio output, and take full ownership of driving them forward.
  • Design and run rigorous experiments to analyze architectural trade-offs and understand how design choices influence a model's scalability, latency, and quality.
  • Curate massive training datasets and execute rigorous experiments to determine how data quality shapes model behavior and performance.
  • Work directly with research scientists and engineers to move quickly from prototype to production.
  • Build training pipelines, evaluation frameworks, and tooling that enable rapid experimentation and iteration.
Desired Qualifications
  • Research experience in speech, audio, or language modeling, including automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech, large language models, or codec models.
  • Familiarity with generative modeling techniques such as diffusion, flow matching, or autoregressive models.
  • Experience with reinforcement learning from human feedback or preference optimization.
  • Competitive programming or olympiad experience.
  • Publications or preprints at venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, Interspeech, ICASSP, or ACL.

Phonic develops digital sound technologies and audio products and services for a broad range of clients, including businesses and individuals, based in San Francisco. Its offerings are built around advanced audio solutions—encompassing hardware and software—that are delivered through direct sales and contractual agreements rather than through a single product line. The company differentiates itself by pursuing ongoing exploration in digital sound and by providing customized audio capabilities tailored to client needs, aiming to expand how sound is used and experienced across various industries. Phonic’s goal is to extend and redefine audio capabilities, enabling more sophisticated and capable sound experiences.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Healthcare and insurance workflows fit its task-oriented voice agents.
  • Lux Capital led its $4 million seed round in April 2025.
  • Small team size can keep product iteration and customer feedback loops tight.

What critics are saying

  • OpenAI, ElevenLabs, and Google can bundle similar capabilities at scale.
  • A single reliability failure can quickly destroy trust in regulated workflows.
  • Its $4 million seed capital limits runway against compute-heavy model development.

What makes Phonic unique

  • Phonic sells an end-to-end speech-to-speech platform, not disconnected voice APIs.
  • Its 300ms end-to-end latency is a concrete benchmark for enterprise buyers.
  • Phonic pairs in-house model training with evaluation and observation tooling.
