  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is preferred.
  • One year of customer service, patient transportation, or nursing aide experience is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, or instructor certification, is required within 90 days.
  • The employee must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English sufficiently to perform essential job functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • The employee must be able to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers using a customer-service focus and positive language principles.
  • The employee must have working knowledge of stretchers, wheelchairs, mobility of intravenous pumps or intravenous lines, and beds as they relate to safety measures.
  • The employee must have working knowledge of isolation, infection-control, and safety procedures and practice universal precautions when assisting patients.
Responsibilities
  • Transport acute, intensive, and critical-care patients in a timely manner by wheelchair, transport cart, stretcher, or bed.
  • Move inpatients and outpatients to diagnostic testing and therapeutic areas, clinics, physician offices, admissions, and discharges throughout the complex.
  • Retrieve the Hover Mat or Jack, lift and move patients to a stretcher, and transport patients back to their rooms to help prevent patient falls.
  • Deliver patient-room furnishings such as bed extensions and sleep chairs, and transport empty beds as a backup duty when needed.
  • Communicate delays to nursing, imaging, and other departments and collaborate with nursing, ancillary staff, and coworkers during patient transport.
  • Document assignments completely according to department protocol.
  • Interact positively and effectively with patients, guests, and internal customers while complying with personal appearance guidelines and maintaining HIPAA compliance.
  • Train and orient new transporters.
  • Make customer-service decisions involving problem-solving, communicating trip delays, and canceling or recalling assignments.
  • Notify nursing staff of patient transport, review the patient passport for completeness, clarify handoff information, verify patient identification using two-step verification, and prepare patients by identifying intravenous bags, Foley catheters, infusion pumps, and other items requiring special handling.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of transport equipment in lobbies and equipment rooms and move equipment left in unauthorized areas to designated storage or report it to the dispatcher.
  • Dispose of soiled linen and remove items such as urinals, bedpans, and emesis basins from equipment; place unneeded equipment in the soiled utility room.
  • Report patient observations, conditions, and problems to licensed personnel while protecting patient and family privacy.
  • Disinfect equipment before and after each use and allow sufficient drying time.
  • Transport and store oxygen tanks in approved holders, select appropriate oxygen cylinders with clinical staff when applicable, and complete patient handoff when returning to the department.
  • Operate transport equipment safely, tag equipment needing extensive repairs, remove damaged equipment from service, and deliver it for repair.
  • Report potential harm or conflicting information to management through the Patient Safety Net and support initiatives addressing pressure injuries, patient falls, and hospital-acquired infections.
  • Use resources efficiently, manage time, prioritize daily tasks, minimize incidental overtime, and meet labor productivity standards.
  • Participate in hospital performance-improvement projects, in-service programs, and continuing education, and maintain the My Development plan.
