The Certified Cytologist provides a diagnostic evaluation for malignancy and other disease states on both gynecological and a wide variety of non-gynecological body samples.

Scope:
Accurately processes and prepares specimens for screening. Correlates patient history to cellular findings and chooses appropriate cases for pathologist review. Allows appropriate time for slide review of cases, screens the total area of each slide, and adheres to guidelines for daily workload standards. Follows specimen acceptance guidelines and technical procedures. Understands and appropriately utilizes stains, fixative and reagents. Performs look-back as required, and utilizes appropriate action with abnormal and/or unusual and/or inadequate test specimens/results. Performs specimen procedures and collection procedures as required.
Reviews and evaluates completed tests for quality, accuracy, and completeness. Recognizes basic cytology quality assurance problems and takes appropriate corrective action. Records and evaluates quality control data. Identifies and implements solutions to problems as identified through Quality Assurance, Quality Control or Performance Improvement Initiatives.
Assists in maintaining the laboratory section to CLIA , CAP and Joint Commission standards and regulatory requirements. Performs proficiency testing as required by accreditating agencies.
Documents and communicates information thoroughly and accurately. Ensures safe and effective hand off between shifts by communicating clearly with oncoming shift. Monitors equipment reliability and safety. Reports issues and/or repairs or service due. Orders and stocks supplies, cleans rooms, and equipment to maintain work environment.
Performs special projects as assigned. Completes special projects and tasks within time guidelines and reviews progress with the section manager as needed. Assists in writing and reviewing new policy/procedure for the section as needed. Provides education to others as needed, assists in LIS design, upgrades, maintenance of database, if required. Participates in learning activities to expand understanding and knowledge of the field of cytology.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Cytology
CT (ASCP) certification
Preferred:
One (1) year laboratory experience is preferred

- Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required
- Knowledge of gynecological, non-gynecological and FNA biopsy screening for all age groups utilizing the policy/procedures for the department.
Physical Requirements:
- Interact with others by effectively communicating, both orally and in writing.
- Operate computers and other office equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
- See and read computer monitors and documents.
- Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
- May require lifting and transporting objects and office supplies, bending, kneeling and reaching.
