Requirements
  • STANDARD 3-5: Dental assisting faculty must have background in and current knowledge of dental assisting, the specific subjects they are teaching and educational theory and methodology consistent with teaching assignment, e.g., curriculum development, educational psychology, test construction, measurement and evaluation
  • STANDARD 3-6: Faculty providing didactic instruction must have earned at least a baccalaureate degree
  • STANDARD 3-7: Laboratory, preclinical and clinical faculty must hold any current dental assisting credential required by the state in addition to a Dental Assisting National Board “Certified Dental Assistant” credential*; Faculty members teaching additional or expanded dental assisting functions should be credentialed appropriately in those functions as required by the state
  • Faculty members teaching additional or expanded dental assisting functions should be credentialed appropriately in those functions as required by the state
  • Licensed dental hygiene faculty who teach dental radiography, coronal polishing, and the placement of pit and fissure sealants would be eligible to teach these functions to dental assisting students without obtaining additional certification
  • Honorary emeritus status issued by the Dental Assisting National Board is not recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
  • All degrees shall be from accredited institutions or from internationally reputable and recognized institutions
  • Exceptions to these requirements may be made by the Provost upon presentation of evidence of a record of experience or other credentials that indicate academic degree equivalence
  • Adjunct Faculty may be appointed on a term contract for instructional, temporary and part-time assignments and have no right to reappointment
  • They are not assigned to other responsibilities such as professional service or college service
  • They can only serve as Faculty Senators if they teach during the current semester or have taught within the last fiscal year
Responsibilities
  • Provide the most effective instruction possible in one’s discipline to insure that the educational needs of students are met and that students achieve specified learning objectives
  • Teach assigned courses, whether on campus or off campus, day or evening, following the official syllabi and using approved textbooks and other learning materials
  • Meet all classes regularly and on time, as scheduled, and for their full duration
  • Establish learning objectives and outcomes for assigned courses
  • Evaluate student performance (attainment of learning objectives) and assign grades
  • Serve as academic advisor to students as assigned
  • Maintain all office hours and make arrangements for appointments with students at other times
  • Participate in the department’s/division’s review of courses and programs
  • Upgrade the educational program by evaluating course content, student needs, and instructional methods; make recommendations for improvement
  • Assist in the preparation of course syllabi; engage in curriculum development (revising and updating existing courses and programs, creating new courses and programs)
  • Evaluate support materials available to students in the library and make recommendations for improving collections in one’s field
  • Keep accurate records of student attendance, grades, etc.
  • Make arrangements with the department chair or assistant dean for covering classes when scheduling an absence
  • Meet all deadlines in submitting grades or other required information on students
  • Attend all faculty meetings, other convocations as appropriate, and graduation exercises
  • Keep up to date with all license/ certification requirements by maintaining continuing education hours as required by the dental board
  • Maintain and assist the director in maintaining all accreditation standards, and policies and procedures.
