Requirements
  • An active dental hygiene license in Alaska or another U.S. state is required; an Alaska State Hygiene License is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required within 45 days of start and must be maintained thereafter.
  • Clinical Competency certification is required within three months of hire and every three years.
  • High Risk Competency certification is required within three months of hire and every year.
  • Knowledge of proper infection control techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles of dental and periodontal disease and appropriate treatment therapies.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of dental instruments.
  • Skill in clinical hygiene.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to exercise accurate clinical judgment.
  • Ability to sit over patients physically for hours at a time.
  • Good dexterity with the hands.
Responsibilities
  • Provide age-specific preventive and curative periodontal and dental care for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients by performing hygiene services.
  • Provide age-specific patient education on the prevention and control of oral disease, emphasizing oral hygiene, home care, and nutrition.
  • Examine oral tissues, provide periodontal therapy and coronal polishing, apply topical fluoride, measure and mark periodontal pockets, perform X-rays, and record pulse, blood pressure, and temperature.
  • Manage the patient schedule.
  • Coordinate and conduct dental prevention activities, including health fairs, sealant clinics, and Head Start clinics.
  • Maintain hygienist supplies and instruments, including sterilization of instruments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • An Alaska State Hygiene License is preferred.
