Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in entry-level and intermediate-level examination, documentation, treatment, and rehousing of library materials.
  • Documented experience or interest in working with special collections library materials.
  • Demonstrated successful collaboration on the completion of basic and advanced conservation treatments.
  • Demonstrated experience researching special collection items and using research and context to inform conservation treatment decisions.
  • Experience with treatment techniques on paper-based materials.
  • High manual dexterity and visual acuity to safely and sensitively complete challenging treatments on valuable library materials.
  • Working knowledge of specialized equipment and hand tools used for the conservation and preservation of paper-based materials.
  • Ability to prioritize routine work assignments, weigh competing options, make decisions, and work in a high-volume setting.
  • Strong knowledge of the history, manufacture, and chemistry of organic- and inorganic-based library materials, including common agents of deterioration.
  • Ability to research special collection items and use research and context to inform conservation treatment decisions.
  • Understanding of decision-making and selection criteria for sorting routine incoming materials into appropriate emergency-response workflows.
  • Ability to work independently while following established procedures and guidelines, with an understanding of conservation ethics and preservation theory.
  • Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and present information in group settings.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and lower objects up to 50 pounds and push a loaded book truck weighing approximately 250 pounds.
  • Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers and work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • A master's degree from a graduate-level art conservation program in the United States or internationally, or equivalent education or experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related area, or equivalent experience or training.
Responsibilities
  • Independently complete challenging entry-level and intermediate technical treatments or preservation activities on selected UCLA Library Special Collection materials.
  • Examine materials and complete photographic and written documentation.
  • Take and analyze samples.
  • Perform conservation treatments and make proposal decisions.
  • Select appropriate housings.
  • Make object-handling and exhibit recommendations.
  • Interact with Preservation & Conservation staff, curators, and librarians regarding handling, treatment, and prioritization.
  • Participate in departmental outreach activities and weekly meetings.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • Pursue continued conservation and material-culture research that contributes to the UCLA Library and the conservation profession.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with library materials.
  • Demonstrated experience training or teaching in the conservation area.
  • Working knowledge of personal-computer hardware and software and the ability to work in a networked Windows environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Ability to use library computer systems, including circulation and cataloging clients, and software supporting laboratory activities such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe software.
  • Ability to keep records and statistics accurately using Excel, Access, or other appropriate software.
