Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Mass Media, Marketing, Public Relations, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of communications-related program management experience.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian cultural protocol.
  • Leadership and managerial skills including consistency, fairness, a positive attitude, and enthusiasm.
  • Organizational skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment.
  • Competency in verbal and written communication with broad and diverse groups, including trustees and senior staff, peers and subordinates, beneficiaries, faculty, students, alumni, government officials, and the Hawaiian community at large.
  • Strategic acumen, including the ability to see the big picture, counsel, and connect dots for leadership, with a strong understanding of how communications drives culture, supports values, and shapes stakeholder experience.
  • The ability to craft messages that enable campus leaders to be effective storytellers to internal and external stakeholders and proactively align people around the organization's vision, mission, and strategy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop trust and cooperation among management, staff, and outside groups.
  • The ability to remain flexible in a fast-paced, demanding, and dynamic work environment, including willingness to work flexible hours, events, and weekends.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience with Hawaiian communities and issues relevant to Kamehameha Schools and Hawaiian culture.
  • The ability to maintain composure during difficult conversations and situations in the community.
  • The ability to work with confidential material and subjects.
  • The ability to speak publicly with confidence, including presenting material to inform and influence.
  • Knowledge of how to use social media and other platforms as communication vehicles.
  • In-depth knowledge of the communities served by the campus.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, manage, and implement the overall campus communication strategy.
  • Develop, manage, and deliver executive thought-leader platforms and strategic communications through relevant messaging that promotes clarity, confidence, and connection to the campus brand, overall strategy, and campus or organizational culture.
  • Develop, manage, and implement a complex, multifaceted, and adaptable communication campaign to build a positive image and brand for the campus and the overall reputation of Kamehameha Schools.
  • Articulate complex issues clearly and formulate recommendations that support the communication strategy and are appropriate for various audiences across stakeholder groups.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Poʻo Kula and campus leadership on communications strategy, including messaging, positioning, stakeholder influence, and optimal timing, forums, and content for key communications; deliverables may include written communications, speeches, columns, and town hall meetings.
  • Coach and develop campus leadership team members in delivering strategic messaging to internal and external audiences.
  • Measure and evaluate the impact of communication efforts, gather and analyze stakeholder feedback and other data, and use the results to drive communications planning.
  • Develop effective internal change-management communications strategies.
  • Advocate for resources and support needed to build the campus brand and image, and collaborate with the enterprise-wide Communications Group to secure and manage internal and external resources for campus communication plans.
  • Collaborate with the enterprise Communications Group to drive creative strategies and plans that leverage executives, staff, students, and others in telling leadership's story.
  • Work with the enterprise Communications Group to ensure each story or inquiry is handled by the appropriate person inside or outside the organization.
  • Manage the campus website and social media platforms for accuracy and relevance, and manage other media relationships under Kamehameha Schools policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate on integrated strategies, organization-wide campaigns, externally facing issues, and other strategic communications opportunities, including campus-specific issues that could affect the wider organization.
  • Ensure campus communication campaigns align with and support the Kamehameha Schools organizational communication strategy.
  • Engage the community through collaborations that promote understanding and support for campus initiatives and goals while ensuring the campus supports the community, building trust among stakeholders critical to campus, tri-campus, and enterprise-wide goals.
  • Cultivate and nurture community relationships to build, grow, and support partnerships across campus programs, including the Honolulu Region, statewide regional coordinators, and the alumni association.
  • Provide counsel and advice to leadership and staff, including risk-management solutions and cultural expertise.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in Business, Communications, Journalism, or Marketing.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Manager or Director.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of Hawaiian history and culture as appropriate for education and corporate settings.
  • Familiarity with the Kamehameha Schools organization, operations, and matters.
  • Previous experience facilitating communications training programs, such as presentation or spokesperson training.
  • Previous experience in a school environment and familiarity with the culture of education.
