Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in any field of study and completion of either a 2-year Physician Assistant program or a Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Nurse Practitioner License required, or Registration Physician Assistant License required, and Certificate 1 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam and diagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for patients in both elective and emergent situations.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the physician completes pre-admission history and physical examination. Ensures that all requisite testing is completed.
  • Coordinates elements of the treatment plan and assesses, evaluates and documents patient progress. Reviews patient care management issues with the Intensivist. Consults with appropriate resources as needed.
  • Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests and formulates an interpretation.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to: Insertion or removal of central venous lines, insertion of nasogastric tubes or other enteral feeding tubes, insertion of arterial lines, bladder catheterization, phlebotomy and IV insertion, and electrocardiograms.
  • Enters orders for the initial ICU admission and subsequent ICU care. Is responsible for making daily rounds on patients alone and/or with intensivist or surgical team; report findings to attending physician. Places orders in the EMR.
  • Is responsible for preparing patients for discharge and completing documentation for same. Participates in discharge conferences as appropriate/necessary. Completes patient care referrals and coordination of care as necessary.
  • Participates in the quality improvement/quality assurance program.
  • May be responsible for communicating patient hospital summary directly to referring physician.
  • Educates, instructs and counsels patients and families. Provides psychological, emotional and informational support to patients and families. Communicates patients' needs to appropriate team members.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively and establishes good rapport with all levels of personnel.
