Senior Backend Engineer

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Backend Software Engineer to join our growing team. As a Senior Backend Engineer, Public Sector, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the systems that power our software products. 

Security Clearance: This role requires eligibility for U.S. security clearance based on current or future interactions with domestic and foreign governments.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable and maintainable backend systems using a variety of programming languages
• Act as a mentor to junior engineers on the team
• Think ahead and draft up milestone goals for deliverables
• Participate in architecture design reviews and development of projects
• Optimize database performance and implement data security measures
• Write clean, maintainable code that follows best practices and adheres to coding standards
• Troubleshoot and debug issues as they arise
• Write unit tests and participate in code reviews to ensure the quality and reliability of our products

Requirements

• 3-5 years of experience in creating, deploying and managing open-source spatial data infrastructure such as tileserver-gl, mapproxy, geoserver and PostgreSQL
• 5+ years of experience creating custom SQL functions for PostgreSQL using PL/pgSQL or PL/Python
• 5+ years of experience building automated data pipelines using container orchestration platforms
• 5+ years of experience using spatial data processing libraries such as GDAL and CGAL or wrappers for them in Python, Java or Go
• 3+ years of experience generating and deploying Mapbox or Maplibre Vector Tiles (MVT) using tools such as tippecanoe, pg_tileserv, martin, t-rex, tegola or PostGIS
• 5+ years of experience and deep domain knowledge of OpenStreetMap data schema and processing using tools such as imposm3, osm2pgsql, osmosis or osmium
• 5+  years of experience creating containerized backend services for OGC compliant spatial APIs such as WMTS, TileJSON, OGC Tiles and TMS
• 3+ years of experience in JavaScript.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• 3+ years of experience in backend development using Python
• Experience with database design and management
• Experience with Git
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
• Knowledge of REST API design principles

Nice-to-haves

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
• Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS or GCP
• Experience with continuous integration and deployment tools
• Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker

• Compensation (commensurate with experience): $140,000 - $150,000 (base salary) + bonus + equity
