Requirements
  • 10+ years of professional experience in artificial intelligence/machine learning, data engineering, or data science, including 4+ years in formal leadership roles at a B2B software-as-a-service or artificial intelligence/machine learning platform company.
  • A demonstrated track record of building and leading artificial intelligence/machine learning, data engineering, or data science teams of 5–15 people from a small base.
  • Deep technical credibility across modern artificial intelligence/machine learning stacks, including data platforms such as PostgreSQL, pgvector, and MongoDB or equivalent; machine learning platforms for training, serving, and MLOps; and generative artificial intelligence technologies including large language models, embeddings, retrieval-augmented generation, and fine-tuning.
  • Experience shipping production machine learning and artificial intelligence workloads to enterprise customers with evaluation, observability, drift detection, and confidence-scoring practices.
  • A hands-on player-coach posture, including reviewing technical designs, participating in architecture debates, and writing reference implementations when warranted.
  • A strong hiring track record, including building an artificial intelligence/machine learning team within the last two to three years.
  • The ability to explain artificial intelligence and machine learning strategy to engineers, product teams, executives, and customers.
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally with product, engineering, and customer-facing teams.
  • Experience with multi-tenant data architecture and the operational realities of serving machine learning and artificial intelligence workloads to enterprise customers.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with the chief technology officer and leadership to set the intelligence strategy and roadmap, and lead and own execution.
  • Build, hire, and develop the Intelligence team; set its craft standards and operating cadence, and manage people and agents.
  • Establish the canonical data substrate for artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads, including schema discipline, tenant isolation, data contracts, lineage, and governance.
  • Establish the machine learning and artificial intelligence platform, including the model lifecycle, feature store, vector store, training and serving infrastructure, and MLOps practice.
  • Lead the platform’s learning and reasoning capabilities, including retrieval-augmented generation architectures, agentic data systems, knowledge graphs, and mechanisms that allow data to compound into platform intelligence.
  • Develop and drive evaluation frameworks for model quality, agent reliability, drift, and platform effectiveness, and make artificial intelligence workloads observable to engineering, product, and customer success.
  • Partner with product on the artificial intelligence use-case portfolio by translating business needs into machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities and translating those capabilities into product opportunities.
  • Drive build-versus-buy decisions for the artificial intelligence and machine learning stack, using proven solutions and building only differentiated capabilities.
  • Set production-readiness standards for artificial intelligence workloads in collaboration with the platform team.
  • Engage directly with customer-facing teams and customers when needed to ground Intelligence decisions in real workflow problems.
  • Mentor engineers and data scientists and raise the technical bar through design reviews, code reviews, and technical coaching.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in construction technology, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, building information modeling, architecture, engineering, and construction, or other computer-aided design and engineering workflow domains, or strong willingness to learn the domain.
  • A background in artificial intelligence security and threat modeling, including prompt injection, data exfiltration, agent abuse, and tenant isolation for artificial intelligence workloads.
  • Experience with Azure-native artificial intelligence architecture, including Azure Machine Learning, Azure AI Foundry, and Azure Kubernetes Service.
  • Experience establishing a data platform or machine learning platform from an early-stage foundation to scale.
  • Prior experience at a Series B or growth-stage company navigating the transition from product-market fit to scale.
  • A background in regulated or enterprise sales motions where compliance, security, and service-level-agreement discipline are required.

What believers are saying

  • Innovate 2026 in Seattle drew 600-plus MEP contractors on August 18–20, 2026.
  • Latka estimated Stratus at $9.6 million revenue with 87 employees in 2025.
  • Mestek integration removes manual bottlenecks and pushes cut lists directly into production equipment.

What critics are saying

  • Autodesk Construction Cloud partners crowd Stratus with 33,000 customers and 1,600 employees.
  • Stratus Labs tools are experimental and available only upon request, slowing adoption.
  • If Autodesk or Trimble bundles similar machine integrations, Stratus becomes a feature, not a company.

What makes Stratus unique

  • Stratus spans piping, plumbing, sheet metal, and electrical workflows in one platform.
  • Mestek partnership ties Stratus software directly to Lockformer tubeforming machines.
  • Stratus Labs introduced agentic spooling and an MCP server on August 18, 2026.

Stratus launches AI innovation arm with agentic spooling tools for contractors

Stratus, a digital fabrication platform for contractors in piping, plumbing, sheet metal, and electrical trades, has launched Stratus Labs, its AI and innovation division. The announcement was made at Innovate 2026, the company's annual MEP event in Seattle. Stratus Labs released its first experimental tools: agentic spooling capabilities and an MCP server connection. The agentic spooling collection includes Assembly Matcher, Assembly Designer, and Assembly Agent, which automate and predict assembly work across trades. The company also introduced its Big Data MCP Server, allowing customers and partners to build custom workflows using Stratus data. Led by co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Jonathan Umscheid, Stratus Labs formalises the company's approach of rapid development in partnership with customers. The experimental tools are available to Stratus customers upon request.
