Responsibilities
  • Receive assignments from the supervisor to assist in resident care and exchange verbal reports between shifts regarding special events, changes in residents’ conditions, incidents, and accidents.
  • Check residents in the assigned section regularly, answer call lights promptly, and address resident problems or needs by providing care or reporting them to the appropriate leader.
  • Report all resident and employee incidents to the leader and complete incident reports.
  • Maintain knowledge of residents’ needs, note significant changes in their conditions, identify emergencies, respond appropriately, and document unusual occurrences and progress in residents’ medical charts.
  • Explain procedures to residents before administering them.
  • Welcome new residents and help them adjust to the new environment, including assisting with room personalization and monitoring light, sound, and temperature levels.
  • Establish and maintain positive relations with residents, families, and community guests, and show empathy toward residents as needed.
  • Observe residents’ safety needs, identify safety and security hazards, and report them after ensuring the resident is out of immediate danger.
  • Assist residents with personal care, including nail care, hair care, oral hygiene, bathing, and dressing, following Universal Precautions protocols.
  • Prepare residents for bed rest and provide special care to residents in casts or traction by monitoring comfort, skin color, and temperature.
  • Assist residents with physical needs, including eating, while encouraging them to perform functions independently within their capacity.
  • Follow nursing policies and procedures for body mechanics, transfers, body positioning, and mobility; reposition residents with supportive devices as needed and report the repositioning.
  • Transfer residents as necessary.
  • Prepare residents for meals, escort them to the dining room, verify trays against diet cards, set trays, serve and collect food trays, assist with eating, and offer substitutes for uneaten food.
  • Deliver between-meal nourishment and fresh drinking water, encourage or assist residents with eating and drinking, and document acceptance as appropriate.
  • Complete charge and inventory slips, monitor supply inventory daily, and use supplies and equipment properly without waste.
  • Straighten dresser tops and stands, and label, separate, and care for personal care items.
  • Maintain cleanliness of resident units, the central bathing area, treatment and supply rooms, workrooms, and linen closets; sanitize bathtubs after each use and clean spills from floors.
  • Make and change beds, collect and bag soiled linen, place soiled clothing in the appropriate receptacle, store clean linen, handle personal laundry according to policy, maintain the linen cart, and distribute clean towels according to schedule.
  • Assist with transporting residents to and from activities and assist with or direct activities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential is preferred.
  • Special care and dementia care employees will receive additional training in caring for and treating residents with dementia.
