Requirements
  • Successful completion of an approved curriculum in diagnostic medical sonography or equivalent educational background is required.
  • Current registration, or registry eligibility, by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Obstetrics and Gynecology is required.
  • Nuchal translucency certification through NTQR or the Fetal Maternal Foundation is required, or must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • The ability to work with limited supervision is required.
  • One year of prior obstetrics experience or a recent internship in obstetrics or a maternal-fetal medicine clinic is preferred.
  • An associate degree is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification are preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Perform all requested sonographic examinations ordered by the attending physician.
  • Acquire and analyze data using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies.
  • Perform first-trimester ultrasounds, nuchal translucency measurements, second-trimester basic and detailed anatomic surveys, third-trimester ultrasounds, limited examinations, follow-up examinations, transvaginal examinations, and biophysical profiles.
  • Assist perinatologists with invasive procedures such as amniocentesis.
  • Provide summary findings to physicians to support patient diagnosis and management.
  • Prepare accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports in the Viewpoint system.
  • Perform portable examinations as ordered.
  • Maintain equipment and report equipment failures to the Lead Sonographer.
  • Perform daily pre-visit planning and assign related clerical duties as required.
  • Prepare examination rooms, stock supplies, clean up, and sterilize equipment as needed.
  • Monitor patients, recognize abnormal changes in their conditions, and respond appropriately to emergencies with adequate handoff.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure appropriate patient care.
  • Protect personal health information and comply with the Howard University FPP Privacy Policy.
  • Adhere to infection control, safety procedures, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Serve as a communication liaison between physicians and patients.
  • Participate in continuing education and demonstrate critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Receive, organize, prioritize, store, and maintain transmittable information using electronic technology.
  • Perform other duties as defined by management or physicians.
