Requirements
  • A PhD degree and about 15 years of experience, an MS degree and 17 years of experience, or a BS degree and about 21 years of experience; the BS degree must be in Engineering or the candidate must have current Professional Engineer registration.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance.
  • Must pass pre-employment screening, including a drug and breath alcohol test and a Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Ability to perform field walk-downs involving uneven surfaces, distances over a half mile, ladders, protective clothing, and respirator-required environments.
  • Ability to produce quality documents with attention to detail and meet management-defined expectations.
  • Ability to coordinate, interface, and communicate with management, engineering, facility, operations, quality assurance, and test personnel.
  • Ability to communicate clear, concise, and accurate reports, evaluations, documents, procedures, reviews, comment resolutions, email, and oral presentations.
  • Ability to mentor junior team members and develop their design knowledge.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate technical programs, analyze customer needs and technology trends, recommend technical programs to management, and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Apply specialized or broad-based technical experience and external and internal technical resources to resolve complex problems.
  • Incorporate complex technical requirements, new or special materials or processes, and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
  • Provide technical leadership for complex problems, influence technical direction across disciplines, and communicate technical solutions across the department.
  • Recommend and plan research, development, testing, quality assurance, engineering, and technology programs for the department and other professionals.
  • Develop schedules, monitor progress and budget expenditures, review work quality, communicate results, and represent the organization to oversight groups and professional societies.
  • Mentor less senior professionals to transfer technical knowledge and improve communication skills.
  • Provide staff augmentation support to SRNS and integrate engineering activities for assigned projects.
  • Establish design criteria, resource forecasts, schedules, priorities, and engineering tools for assigned projects.
  • Manage project tasks and deliver results for task cost and schedule.
  • Provide overall engineering, design direction, leadership, and management for assigned projects and tasks.
  • Provide administrative guidance to leads and managers.
  • Manage the administration, document control, project controls, and quality engineering sections through section supervisors.
  • Resolve conflicts between project direction and technical direction from functional managers.
  • Participate in department and site-wide programmatic issue resolution and quality improvements.
  • Create project teams by requesting, evaluating, and developing engineering expertise.
  • Evaluate subcontractor tasks to ensure design outputs meet technical, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Establish design baselines for assigned projects and engineering work requests.
  • Recommend subcontractor authorizations for new work and baseline changes.
  • Evaluate project cost and schedule variances and implement corrective actions.
  • Use EVMS tools.
  • Review cost accounts for procurement of engineered materials.
  • Work with diverse teams to deliver results.
  • Establish project scope of work and ensure firm customer requirements are developed.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Total Quality concepts and support implementation of division and department Total Quality initiatives.
Desired Qualifications
  • Active Department of Energy or Department of Defense clearance within the past two years.
  • Previous Department of Energy or National Nuclear Security Administration work experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer licensure in any state.
