Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a certified Medical Assistant program (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a clinical setting is required; orthopedic or surgical specialty experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and basic computer applications is required.
  • The candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The candidate must be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
  • The candidate must be able to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and feel objects.
  • The candidate must be able to climb, pull, push, and kneel, with a maximum unassisted lift of 50 pounds and an average lift of 25-50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Complete electronic medical record intake at the time of service.
  • Escort patients to examination rooms.
  • Review histories and physicals for new patients and new problems before the physician sees the patient.
  • Provide medical assistance as needed, including casting, suture removal, drawing injections, and recording prescriptions.
  • Provide patients with instructions regarding cast-related issues.
  • Assist with physical therapy requests, off-work requests, and school notes.
  • Assign procedure and diagnosis codes determined by the physician and document them on the encounter form.
  • Review encounter forms for coding completeness and accuracy, ensuring that all procedures and supplies are recorded.
  • Receive and respond to medical messages and prescription requests from patients and record them in the patient record.
  • Communicate with physicians and staff.
  • Maintain compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations for biohazardous disposal.
  • Order medical supplies as needed.
  • Assist with filing medical records when necessary.
  • Dispose of expired medications.
  • Facilitate scheduling of outpatient testing and pre-certification for MRI, CT, bone scan, DEXA scan, and other tests as necessary.
  • Keep examination rooms and clinic work areas clean and tidy for the next scheduled clinic.
  • Attend department, clinic, or company meetings as required.
  • Take appropriate action regarding questionable findings or concerns.
  • Attend required annual in-service programs.
  • Follow company policies, procedures, and facility safety requirements, and notify the supervisor of potentially unsafe situations.
  • Provide Saturday on-call coverage if necessary.
  • Travel to satellite offices if necessary.
  • Obtain MRI and X-ray readings for physician review and diagnosis, including follow-up with local radiologists when required.
  • Contact ancillary services to coordinate follow-up care and communication among all parties.
  • Develop a streamlined process for written or verbal messages to patients after physician review.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with orthopedic-specific electronic medical record systems such as Athenahealth, NextGen, or Epic.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, medical procedures, and durable medical equipment.
  • Bilingual ability, such as Spanish or Mandarin.
  • Orthopedic or surgical specialty experience.
