The Opportunity
CZI is looking to hire an experienced and skilled employment attorney reporting to CZI’s Deputy General Counsel to support CZI and its affiliated entities. You will be a member of CZI’s Legal & Grants team and an integral partner to the People Team in supporting our most important asset, our employees.
You will manage employment-related and other operations-related matters as they arise. You will be asked to assess situations, and provide advice, with respect to all aspects of employment law, from recruiting, employee relations, separation of service, diversity, equity and inclusion, compensation and benefits, talent development and management, health and safety, and more. You will be a builder by working closely with the People Team to develop programs that support our employees. You will be a doer who helps create processes, adopt systems and tools that implement solutions. You will be a champion in developing our culture across CZI.
We are looking for a strategic thinker and problem-solver who is eager to execute on both routine and complex tasks and projects, who can work collaboratively with internal teams and outside counsel, and who can appropriately balance operational priorities and risk. What You’ll Do
- Be responsible for day-to-day management of CZI’s employment law function and other operations-related matters
- Work cross functionally and collaboratively in providing legal advice to teams across CZI and its affiliated entities
- Analyze and resolve legal issues as they arise
- Deeply think about the best way to support strategies that not only include compliance, but additionally support company goals, diversity, equity and inclusion practices, and employee engagement
- Draft, review, and revise policies, agreements, templates, and other employment-related documents
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and industry best practices to inform CZI policies, and work to ensure organizational adoption and compliance
- Strategically engage, work with, and manage outside counsel partnerships
What You’ll Bring
- 8+ years of employment law experience (working both at a law firm and in-house is a plus), including experience in providing day-to-day advice to internal partners
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to partner effectively at all levels both internally and externally to CZI (including an ability to work efficiently and effectively with outside counsel)
- Ability to think systematically in improving organization-wide policies and practices
- Proven ability to de-escalate and resolve conflict
- Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- History of demonstrating good judgment and a high degree of integrity
- Lots of curiosity, an interest to learn, proactive, and adaptable to change
- JD required and an active membership in the California state bar
Compensation
The Redwood City, CA base pay range for this role is $193,000 - $290,000. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process. Pay ranges outside Redwood City are adjusted based on cost of labor in each respective geographical market.
