Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in biology, botany, ecology, or a related field is required.
- At least two years of post-degree fieldwork experience is required.
- Familiarity with southeastern United States natural communities and flora is required.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS for mapping and data analysis is required.
- Competency in statistical analysis using R and data management in Excel is required.
- Ability to use a dichotomous key to identify plants is required.
- Basic understanding of ecological sampling methodologies is required.
- A valid Georgia driver's license in good standing, or the ability to obtain one, is required.
- Ability to hike long distances across challenging terrain, including dense woods, wetlands, and steep ravines, is required.
- Ability to work for extended periods in heat, sun, humidity, ticks, and wet conditions is required.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds safely is required.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills are required.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing circumstances, and meet tight deadlines is required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required for collaboration with partners, the public, and team members.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute day-to-day fieldwork activities to achieve project goals with minimal supervision.
- Prepare digital maps, data-collection tools, and field equipment for trips.
- Follow departmental protocols to collect seeds, pollen, leaf tissue, and herbarium vouchers.
- Travel to field sites across the Southeast to monitor rare plant populations.
- Survey and document key in situ populations of rare and endangered plants.
- Accurately record field observations and experimental data in departmental databases.
- Perform regular data validation and promptly address inconsistencies.
- Analyze experimental data using R and Excel, and generate reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Support the Field Botany Manager in coordinating with local and regional partners on shared conservation projects.
- Prepare and deliver customized reports summarizing project outcomes for partners.
- Manage permitting requirements and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain organized records of permits and project documentation.
- Ensure that all field activities adhere to safety protocols.
- Participate in and contribute to staff training initiatives as needed.
- Track, organize, and maintain Conservation and Research Department equipment, supplies, and vehicles.
Desired Qualifications
- A master's degree is preferred.
- Experience piloting drone equipment for field monitoring and research documentation is preferred.
- Ability to organize and manage drone photo and video data is preferred.
- A Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 drone license is preferred but may be obtained within the first year of employment.
