Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Five years of experience in risk management, finance, or corporate insurance, including one year in a people management role; internal employees may qualify with four years of relevant experience and Houston Methodist performance demonstrating leadership responsibility.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers through a variety of channels.
  • Ability to use interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans and adapt behavior to tasks, situations, and individuals.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, critical thinking, self-direction, initiative, and effective oral and written communication.
  • Ability to identify and understand issues, problems, and opportunities; compare data from different sources; draw conclusions; and choose appropriate actions or solutions.

  • Knowledge of captive insurance operations, self-insured trusts, and corporate insurance programs.
Responsibilities
  • Manage and support the establishment and maintenance of agreements with insurance brokers, consultants, actuaries, and insurance companies.
  • Manage risk exposure programs and transfer vehicles by identifying loss exposures and recommending and implementing risk financing and loss-control measures.
  • Administer risk financing options.
  • Serve as the overall relationship manager with insurance brokers, external consultants, actuaries, appraisers, and insurance companies.
  • Manage daily work activities of department staff to ensure quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency.
  • Provide guidance to staff and contribute to staffing decisions, including hiring and termination decisions.
  • Coach and counsel employees on work-related performance and assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Implement training, monitoring, and operational initiatives that ensure compliance with ethical, legal, accreditation, regulatory, and government requirements.
  • Perform employee selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, evaluation, development, and mentoring.
  • Conduct department meetings, employee rounding, performance appraisals, new-hire feedback sessions, coaching or corrective counseling, and employee recognition activities.
  • Consult across Houston Methodist on loss exposures, risk, and insurance needs and provide timely responses aligned with strategic plans.
  • Prepare written and oral reports for the Houston Methodist Board, medical staff, Finance and Legal departments, committees, and insurance company underwriters.
  • Oversee communication between Houston Methodist and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Plan and organize day-to-day department operations, schedules, and activities; set priorities and functional standards; and direct staff.
  • Drive department service standards and participate in entity committees as the department representative.
  • Oversee cost allocation for insurance and risk-related costs.
  • Maintain the risk management information system, including accurate data management and recordkeeping processes.
  • Ensure a safe and effective work environment and monitor or revise department safety and accreditation or regulatory safety guidelines.
  • Monitor staff credentials and competency requirements.
  • Use and optimize information systems to enhance operations and support performance improvement and data management and analysis.
  • Improve workflow and safety outcomes, report accidents and adverse events, and identify solutions through collaboration.
  • Monitor employee compliance with policies, procedures, and human resources standards and take action upon non-compliance.
  • Manage reserve reporting and ensure claims reserves are accurately and timely reported to Financial Accounting, actuaries, and carriers.
  • Assist with department budget development and manage or audit expenses within approved budget parameters.
  • Develop staffing plans and schedules that meet department and patient needs while maintaining cost effectiveness.
  • Implement strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs by optimizing productivity and resource efficiency.
  • Interface with brokers to secure coverage timely and evaluate coverage and related cost options.
  • Develop budget projections for risk transfer programs and recommend strategies to remain within budget.
  • Identify and implement innovative workflow and practice solutions and lead unit projects or department and system initiatives.
  • Evaluate processes, recommend and implement action plans, and ensure sustainable change.
  • Develop strategic relationships across areas, teams, departments, and units to achieve business goals.
  • Identify developmental needs of self and staff and conduct staff development conversations.
  • Travel within and outside the Houston metropolitan area as required.
  • Participate in on-call coverage during emergencies.
