Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least one year of recent experience within the past five years providing patient care in an emergency department or similar setting is required.
  • EMT, CNA, or MA certification, or equivalent education, is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire.
  • Phlebotomy certification or equivalent experience is required.
Responsibilities
  • Observe all infection prevention guidelines.
  • Assist with admitting and discharging patients.
  • Obtain accurate vital signs and patient weights.
  • Gather and secure patient valuables.
  • Complete unit-specific emergency department technician documentation in the patient medical record.
  • Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms according to standard procedures.
  • Perform wound preparation and apply simple dressings as directed by the registered nurse or licensed independent practitioner.
  • Perform orthopedic splinting as directed by the registered nurse or licensed independent practitioner.
  • Provide safe patient mobilization using appropriate aids and notify the nurse of additional needs.
  • Perform or assist with safe patient lifts, transfers, turns, and positioning.
  • Maintain patient safety by keeping beds in low positions, side rails raised as appropriate, items within reach, and hazards identified.
  • Maintain patients’ body alignment, comfort, range of motion, and support.
  • Respond to call lights and ensure they remain within reach.
  • Collect and test blood, urine, stool, and other specimens as directed.
  • Assist patients with toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Record intake and output.
  • Provide emotional support as needed.
  • Provide and maintain comfort measures such as blankets and pillows.
  • Perform postmortem care according to policy.
  • Greet visitors and family members and provide information within unit-defined standards.
  • Provide and obtain shift reports as needed or directed.
  • Escort and transport patients by wheelchair or stretcher to locations throughout the hospital.
  • Monitor equipment alarms and notify the nurse appropriately.
  • Round on and observe patients at least hourly, respond to patient needs, and report observations as needed or directed.
  • Perform duties necessary to ensure delivery of prescribed diets and meet dietary needs.
  • Apply, observe, and document restraints or seclusion safely and properly.
  • Observe disoriented or confused patients according to division guidelines or as directed.
  • Assist registered nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members as needed.
  • Maintain patient-care areas.
  • Clean equipment and areas in conjunction with environmental services.
  • Keep dirty utility rooms clean and free of debris and excess supplies.
  • Distribute linen and supplies.
  • Transport specimens, equipment, and medications.
  • Monitor equipment operation and report broken or missing equipment according to OHSU standards.
  • Order supplies as necessary.
  • Stock patient rooms and carts, including resuscitation rooms, intravenous carts, gynecology, ear-nose-throat, and laceration carts.
  • Disinfect or discard equipment and supplies appropriately.
  • Support administrative operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree is preferred.
  • Current experience providing patient care in an emergency department or similar setting is preferred.
