Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Nursing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred, must obtain within 8 years of hire.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan.
  • As of December 29, 2013, any nurse hired by Bronson who does not hold a BSN (or higher nursing degree) will be given 8 years from date of hire date to obtain.
  • BSN within 8 years; if after 8 years, employment will be terminated.
  • BLS certification required by completion of core orientation.
  • Critical care or Advanced Life Support as well as other certifications may be required for some RNs, unit specific.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action.
  • Must be able to constantly communicate both verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Regularly lifting up to 50 pounds; sustained periods of mental/visual fatigue; ability to handle physically demanding tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the care delivery for patients in the organization throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge.
  • Utilize the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation and evaluation.
  • Coordinate the care provided by other professionals; delegating selected acts, tasks or functions that fall within the scope of professional nursing practice and the abilities of patient care assistants and universal service assistants.
  • Provide selected aspects of physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice as appropriate given the patient's level of acuity and complexity of care required.
  • Document and communicate during each tour of duty the patient's response to care provided, consumption of resources and anticipated needs.
  • Collect comprehensive data pertinent to the patients’ health or the situation; assess the patient’s physical and developmental needs; analyze assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs; document nursing history and age appropriate physical/emotional needs/strengths for assigned patients; review vital signs to assess condition of patient and detect deviations from normal.
  • Analyze the assessment data to determine patient problems; identify patient problems; confirm problems with patient and family when appropriate; document the expected outcomes and plan of care related to the problems through use of the clinical pathway and outcome teaching record.
  • Identify expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient; utilize patient/family input when defining outcomes; coordinate discharge planning for outcomes not achieved utilizing the continuum of care available.
  • Develop a plan that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes; incorporate clinical pathways into the plan when appropriate; develop individualized interventions with patient input when appropriate; consider data from other members of the healthcare team when developing the plan of care.
  • Implement the identified plan; administer prescribed medication and treatment in accordance with approved nursing techniques and policies; utilize evidence-based interventions specific to the patient’s plan; maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of the patient; initiate a patient education plan and coordinate implementation; manage the care plan for patients by organizing and delegating interventions; evaluate the effectiveness of care given by self and others.
  • Evaluate progress toward attainment of the expected outcomes; document patient response toward the expected outcomes; evaluate the effectiveness of the planned interventions and patient response.
  • Standards of Professional Performance: participate in quality improvement activities; use results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice; maintain ongoing educational activities; keep professional records; provide age appropriate care in a culturally sensitive manner; participate in self-evaluation and peer review; share knowledge with peers; maintain compassionate relationships; contribute to a supportive work environment; collaborate with patient, family and others to effect change; integrate ethical provisions and advocate for patient; integrate research findings into practice; consider safety, effectiveness, cost and impact; delegate tasks based on patient needs; educate patients and families on options; provide leadership in professional practice; participate in nursing councils and committees; attend unit staff meetings; promote a healthy work environment.
