Requirements
  • A nurse practitioner must graduate from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • A nurse practitioner must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
  • A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • A physician assistant must hold a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant.
  • A physician assistant must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
  • A physician assistant must hold certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
  • The position requires proficiency with computers.
  • The position requires strong communication skills.
  • The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • The employee must be able to work closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the scope of practice and specialty area.
  • Coordinate medical specialty teams to develop comprehensive patient plans and review plans of care with the clinical team.
  • Participate in directing patient care, perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and coordinate ongoing management of neurosurgical patients.
  • Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for neurosurgery patients and their families in the ambulatory setting.
  • Complete acute assessments, pre-procedure evaluations, surgical evaluations, and ongoing follow-up in the ambulatory setting.
  • Complete integrated evaluations and develop treatment and surgical plans.
  • Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with neurosurgery faculty or under established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results in accordance with clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal patient findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Coordinate services and tests before admission and for outpatient follow-up appointments.
  • Develop individualized plans of care, including patient teaching, disposition planning, follow-up, and referrals.
  • Care for patients across the age continuum within the limits of education and certification.
  • Identify unstable or complex neurosurgery situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate neurosurgery patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
  • Provide acute and ongoing ambulatory care to neurosurgery patients.
  • Assist with collecting patient outcome measures.
  • Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to clinical decision-making and management of patient and family needs.
  • Use clinical equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness.
  • Maintain current clinical knowledge and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for neurosurgery patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the patient medical record in accordance with hospital policies and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve outcome-based improvements in patient care.
  • Lead the development and implementation of changes in neurosurgery practice that improve patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Initiate and participate in interdisciplinary patient care, program development, and education approaches.
  • Serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote innovation in the expanded role and delivery of neurosurgery care across inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review neurosurgery data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
  • Assist neurosurgery faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Neurosurgery or acute-care experience is preferred.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.
  • An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse seeking operating-room first-assist privileges must complete an Association of periOperative Registered Nurses-approved Registered Nurse First Assistant certificate program and pass the program.
  • A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
