Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree with teacher certification and special education endorsement(s), or a master's degree and other qualifications enabling application for temporary or full approval as a special education teacher.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Skill in interviewing and individual and group treatment techniques.
  • Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations for special education students.
  • Demonstrated initiative and understanding when working with students, parents or guardians, teachers, and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with board policies and established procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct services to special education students in support of the general education teacher.
  • Provide consultation and assistance to general education teachers in planning, adapting, and accommodating instruction for special education students.
  • Team teach with general education teachers in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • Assist general education teachers in supervising volunteers and teacher aides who support curriculum modifications, adapted assignments, and individualized student support.
  • Assist teachers and the school social worker in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans for students on the teacher's caseload.
  • Consult with general education teachers on assigning grades and developing evaluative measures for students on the teacher's caseload.
  • Participate in child study teams and assist with evaluating educational needs and intervention strategies for students suspected of having disabilities.
  • Schedule and conduct Individualized Education Program Team meetings.
  • Identify student deficits and strengths and write individual student goals, objectives, transition plans, and Individualized Education Programs.
  • Serve as a member of the Multi-disciplinary Evaluation Team for students referred for special education services.
  • Assist teachers with curriculum and classroom activity adaptations and modifications.
  • Serve as liaison to parents of special education students and encourage their participation in the program of services.
