Requirements
  • Hold a valid, unencumbered license issued by the State Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Be eligible for approval by the State Board of Registered Nursing as an instructor for Medical-Surgical, OB, Pediatrics, Mental Health, Community Health, or Geriatrics.
  • Hold a Master's degree from an accredited college or university that includes coursework in nursing, education, or administration and academic preparation for the subject taught, or have completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and be currently enrolled in or willing to enroll in a Master of Science in Nursing program.
  • Have a minimum of four years of experience, including one year within the last five years, as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
  • Have clinical experience within the last five years, with clinical teaching in an registered nurse program applying toward direct patient care experience.
  • Be clinically competent as defined in CCR Section 1420(c).
  • Have expertise in at least one of the following nursing areas: Mental Health, Medical-Surgical, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, Labor and Delivery, Community Health, or Critical Care.
Responsibilities
  • Provide Skills Lab and/or Clinical site education to students enrolled at the assigned Workforce Development Program site.
  • Provide education in the skills lab and/or clinical setting in accordance with the established curriculum and faculty expertise.
  • Plan and supervise student clinical experiences in assigned health care facilities.
  • Evaluate student performance in relation to clinical learning outcomes in accordance with established nursing department policies and procedures.
  • Provide timely feedback on clinical performance or specific events after observation.
  • Maintain accurate clinical and/or skills lab attendance records and completed skills check-off forms, and assist with requested programmatic outcome data collection.
  • Ensure clinical assignments meet both student and facility needs.
  • Determine the best methods to observe, instruct, and evaluate students.
  • Continuously improve the quality of instruction.
  • Demonstrate or acquire skills for using online activities to enhance course content during interactive teaching and learning.
  • Submit required program reports and forms to the Academic Site Director in a timely manner.
  • Keep current with innovative technologies and safety regulations.
  • Participate in committee activities that support the mission and function of the nursing program as needed.
  • Attend faculty meetings.
  • Provide students with ongoing communication through office hours, electronic communication, or another appropriate method.
  • Work at least 40 hours per week at the institution, with hours varying according to clinical rotations and skills lab courses.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have one year of experience teaching nursing-related courses or have completed a course that includes practice in teaching nursing.
