Requirements
  • Vocational training, an apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in a related field is required.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline are required.
  • Availability to work late evenings and weekends, with occasional schedule flexibility during changes in Library hours and periods of staff shortages or absences, is required.
  • Ability to work independently as the sole supervisor in a large academic library is required.
  • Ability to carry or lift loads of up to 50 pounds, push or pull loaded book trucks, and shelve and retrieve materials at varying heights is required.
  • Ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods, stand for up to four hours, perform repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movements, and visually and audibly engage with print and electronic materials for extended periods is required.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise the work of clerical staff and serve as the supervisor in charge of the Regenstein or Mansueto Library, including overseeing building security and resolving problems and appeals related to entry policies.
  • Execute opening or closing procedures, report building issues to Library and University Facilities Services, and provide an initial response to emergencies.
  • Enforce policies that support a scholarly environment, resolve patron problems and appeals, refer concerns to appropriate campus entities when necessary, and document and report incidents.
  • Troubleshoot library technology, including public access workstations, micro-media readers, compact shelving, printers, and audio/visual equipment.
  • Provide customer service by answering patron questions about access services, overdue books, recalls, reserve problems, and fines in person, by phone, and through the online ticketing system, and collect fines and fees.
  • Route questions to appropriate resources when they are beyond the supervisor's area of expertise, responsibility, or knowledge.
  • Manage daily circulation workflow, including lending materials awaiting pickup, course reserves, and general collections; process requests; store materials; and perform audits and withdrawals using the Mansueto automated storage and retrieval system.
  • Train, supervise, and help track attendance and performance of approximately 20 part-time student counter attendants, and coach and direct them in maintaining circulation policies and customer service standards.
  • Oversee the retrieval and scanning of Mansueto materials for document delivery and scan-and-delivery services, and assist with interlibrary loan requests.
  • Provide initial troubleshooting of automated storage and retrieval system problems and refer issues to Facilities staff when appropriate.
  • Answer patron questions related to Access Services and serve as a resource for questions about other Library services.
  • Distribute work to and monitor work performed by student counter attendants, and troubleshoot equipment as needed.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A college degree is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a library or related environment is preferred.
  • Previous experience directing or supervising the work of others is preferred.
  • Significant customer service experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, email, and internet work applications is preferred.
  • Ability to give and receive direction, work independently, and collaborate effectively as part of a diverse team is preferred.
  • Ability to serve patrons and enforce library policies with clarity, consistency, patience, and empathy is preferred.
  • Ability to manage staff and projects in alignment with departmental priorities is preferred.
  • Ability to identify, respond to, and refer issues while exercising discretion and sound judgment is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, is preferred.
