Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • At least one year of preoperative or post-anesthesia care unit experience is required.
  • Medical-surgical nursing experience is required.
  • Current state licensure to practice in good standing is required.
  • Successful completion of Basic Life Support or Basic Cardiac Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required.
  • Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required.
  • Successful completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required when pediatric care is included in the facility's scope of services.
Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCA.
  • Assess patients' preoperative and postoperative status at intervals according to facility or healthcare organization policies and procedures, including cardiovascular, respiratory and airway, neurological, hemodynamic, pain and comfort, and mental status.
  • Interpret information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors.
  • Describe the underlying pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes.
  • Describe the physiology associated with various anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions.
  • Apply relevant scoring systems and discharge criteria for patient transfer, including the Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score (PARSAP), Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System (PADSS), and White score.
  • Develop individualized perianesthesia plans of care.
  • Implement plans of care, including preparing for and managing recovery from general, monitored anesthesia care, regional, and local anesthesia.
  • Protect patients from injury caused by positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects.
  • Communicate patients' current status throughout the perianesthesia continuum of care.
  • Provide acute pain and comfort management as needed.
  • Administer medications safely and correctly using the eight rights of safe medication administration.
  • Perform interventions to maintain wound integrity and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
  • Perform interventions to maintain genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, as well as fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance, at or above baseline levels.
  • Perform interventions to ensure patients reach or return to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
  • Perform interventions to protect patients from infection.
  • Manage patients' comorbid conditions as applicable.
  • Manage patients' fluids as prescribed.
  • Assess patients' or designated support persons' knowledge and provide education regarding expected psychosocial responses, nutritional management, medication management, pain and comfort management, wound management, and expected responses to operative or invasive procedures.
  • Involve patients or designated support persons in decisions affecting perioperative plans of care and the rehabilitation process.
  • Protect patients' rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
  • Provide consistent and comparable care regardless of setting.
  • Evaluate patients' progress toward attaining outcomes.
  • Transfer care as needed.
  • Provide accurate, concise, and pertinent handoff reports to other teammates regarding patients' conditions and responses to care.
  • Delegate tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act, state board of nursing or professional registration requirements, state laws, and job descriptions.
  • Document nursing care completely, accurately, and legibly.
  • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as needed.
  • Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Participate in the performance appraisal process.
  • Use problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  • Maintain required competencies.
  • Pursue professional growth.
  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Comply with all facility policies and procedures when providing patient care.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, trainings, and daily safety huddles.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
