- A bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Maintains current Alabama license(s) if required for the area of responsibility.
- Certification by a professional laboratory certification agency, such as ASCP, or eligibility for certification if required for the area of responsibility.
- Three years of hospital laboratory experience.
- Evaluate laboratory workflow and coordinate with sections to ensure service delivery.
- Communicate regularly with the manager about daily operations.
- Fulfill tech-in-charge duties as required and assume bench responsibilities as needed.
- Perform routine, special, and point-of-care laboratory testing according to established policies and procedures.
- Verify laboratory results and quality-control data for accuracy and reliability.
- Perform, evaluate, and document quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Monitor pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing processes and take corrective action when appropriate.
- Evaluate team competency and monitor results, worksheets, quality-control records, proficiency testing, and maintenance logs.
- Participate in evaluating new pre-analytical devices, test methodologies, and instrumentation under the direction of the manager and medical director.
- Orient and train team members.
- Complete performance competency evaluations and coaching plans.
- Provide feedback, rewards, and disciplinary actions for team members in the assigned section.
- Schedule staff to meet workload requirements while minimizing expense.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Prepare work schedules and assignments for team members.
- Manage human-resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
- Supervise time-entry accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain inventory of supplies for the laboratory section.
- Participate in the laboratory quality-improvement program, including incident reports, CAP surveys, turnaround times, and service guarantees.
- Maintain competency processes including orientation and departmental training.
- Enforce departmental safety and infection-control practices.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records and hospital and departmental issues.
- Provide significant input for and lead departmental meetings as directed by the manager.
- Provide laboratory education to departments outside the laboratory as needed.
