Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Maintains current Alabama license(s) if required for the area of responsibility.
  • Certification by a professional laboratory certification agency, such as ASCP, or eligibility for certification if required for the area of responsibility.
  • Three years of hospital laboratory experience.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate laboratory workflow and coordinate with sections to ensure service delivery.
  • Communicate regularly with the manager about daily operations.
  • Fulfill tech-in-charge duties as required and assume bench responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform routine, special, and point-of-care laboratory testing according to established policies and procedures.
  • Verify laboratory results and quality-control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Monitor pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing processes and take corrective action when appropriate.
  • Evaluate team competency and monitor results, worksheets, quality-control records, proficiency testing, and maintenance logs.
  • Participate in evaluating new pre-analytical devices, test methodologies, and instrumentation under the direction of the manager and medical director.
  • Orient and train team members.
  • Complete performance competency evaluations and coaching plans.
  • Provide feedback, rewards, and disciplinary actions for team members in the assigned section.
  • Schedule staff to meet workload requirements while minimizing expense.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Prepare work schedules and assignments for team members.
  • Manage human-resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
  • Supervise time-entry accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies for the laboratory section.
  • Participate in the laboratory quality-improvement program, including incident reports, CAP surveys, turnaround times, and service guarantees.
  • Maintain competency processes including orientation and departmental training.
  • Enforce departmental safety and infection-control practices.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient records and hospital and departmental issues.
  • Provide significant input for and lead departmental meetings as directed by the manager.
  • Provide laboratory education to departments outside the laboratory as needed.
