Requirements
  • Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities; Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience in a social services setting providing direct care to children, youth and adults who have intellectual disabilities; dealing with crises.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Current Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” or “G2” Driver’s License is required, current original copy of driver’s abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is also required.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening including a Broad Record Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Dispense medication and ensure medication charting is completed in compliance with agency policies.
  • Complete safety checks, logbook recordings, intake and discharge during shifts.
  • Ensure participant safety throughout the night including half hourly room checks and documentation.
  • Plan menu according to Canada’s Food Guide; maintain inventory of grocery/household items and generate shopping list.
  • Complete meal/snack preparation for the following day as outlined on the approved menu.
  • Primary responsibility for house maintenance duties and organization/maintenance of property and program supplies.
  • Advocate on behalf of program participants to promote health and well-being.
  • Ensure participants follow through on personal care routines and routines of daily living.
  • Provide intervention for behavioral challenges.
  • Liaise with parents, caregivers, and community partners as required.
  • Record in daily log, shift change book, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, restraint forms, etc.; report needs to team and supervisor.
  • Assist the Respite Program Supervisor in maintenance and updating of participant records and other program documentation.
  • Provide on-call after-hours support and consultation to Respite staff; maintain documentation of calls; assist with basic utility/maintenance issues; notify secondary on-call staff of serious occurrences; provide emergency notifications and direct care support as required.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
