Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a health-related field and one year journey-level work experience in the specialty area; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a health-related field and two years advanced work experience in the specialty area.
  • A master's degree in a health-related field and six months entry-level experience may be substituted for the requirements stated above.
  • Previous technical supervisory work experience is required for supervisory positions.

Responsibilities
  • 35% Oversee and participate in the completion of duties shared among FCCS staff including all aspects of daily facility operation such as the maintenance, troubleshooting and operation of Fortessa X-20, CytoFLEX LX, Northern Lights, ImageStream MkII, FACSAria sorter, MoFlo Astrios sorter, Standard BioTools Helios/Hyperion Imaging MAss Cytometry System, and any instruments purchased in the future for MUSC investigators.
  • Assist with the technical and administrative activities of the FCCS shared resource and supervise the junior technician.
  • Supervises the orientation and training of new users to the facility.
  • Provides expert technical support for experiments including consultation for experimental design and analysis, and ongoing troubleshooting to ensure client satisfaction
  • 30% Works closely with principal investigators to progress their research in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Consults with investigators regarding complex sample preparation and sorting techniques to optimize their experiments and to ensure that experiments are properly designed and competitive within the scientific community.
  • 20% Ensures that laboratory practices, including cells sorting and analytic cytometry, are conducted in accordance with biosafety regulations provided by MUSC and the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry.
  • 10% Works closely with FCCS Director and the HCC providing statistical reports and evaluation of the scientific field to address current and future needs of the facility pertaining to both the advancement of investigator research as well as financial position of the FCCS.
  • 5% Develops and provides instructional presentations for MUSC investigators on the capability and implementation of flow cytometry in research.
  • Presents technical advances in relevant local and national scientific meetings.
Desired Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have advanced technical skill and theoretic understanding of FACS-based cell isolation and analytic procedures as pertaining to biomedical research with an emphasis on cancer-related experimentation.
  • The candidate must have a proven track record of hands-on cell sorting with FACSAria and/or MoFlo Astrios cytometers and be experienced in cytometer maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Applicants must have a working knowledge of laboratory techniques including sample preparation for flow cytometry and experience with biohazard research.
  • The candidate must be proficient in analysis software such as FlowJo, ModFit and FACSDiva.
  • Additional experience with Idea Elan Infinity software for laboratory scheduling and billing is desired.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline and established history of cell sorting are strongly preferred.
  • The position needs a current knowledge of experimental methodology and will include dedicated time for continuing education on techniques through literature review, attendance of University seminars, and participation at regional and/or national conferences.
