Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to operate standard office equipment are required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Manual dexterity for operating standard office equipment is required.
  • The employee must be able to sit for prolonged periods and walk throughout the department or medical complex, using elevators or stairs as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical, receptionist, dispatching, admitting, and discharge duties in support of the assigned patient care department.
  • Greet and admit patients upon arrival; prepare patient identification bands and name tags accurately.
  • Welcome visitors, provide assistance or information, and deliver items to patient rooms.
  • Collect and distribute department mail.
  • Communicate transfer information promptly when a patient is transferred to another facility.
  • Maintain stock levels of office supplies.
  • Perform clerical admission and discharge functions.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments requested by physicians.
  • Arrange transportation for patients as necessary.
  • Organize and maintain patient and department records to support accurate and complete documentation.
  • Fax patient charts as needed for transfer or follow-up care.
  • Coordinate and facilitate communication for efficient intra- and interdepartmental operations.
  • Communicate with departments regarding admitted, discharged, transferred, or deceased patients, and communicate patient information and unit needs within the department.
  • Answer telephone calls courteously and promptly, provide information within the area of knowledge, and forward calls to appropriate staff.
  • Answer patient call bells and dispatch appropriate personnel.
  • Provide physicians and other individuals with requested information about patients or department routines in accordance with the hospital's patient-information-release policy.
  • Coordinate and facilitate timely intra- and interdepartmental transportation of patients.
  • Phone consults to other services accurately and promptly.
  • Maintain communication with patient care departments, including Dietary, Lab, Telemetry, and Video Monitoring, to help ensure patient-care needs are met.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or secretarial school is preferred.
  • One year of administrative or clerical experience is preferred.
