Micron CEO says AI demand for memory outpaces supply by 50%, unveils $10B research centre

Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said data-center customers are seeking about 50% more memory supply than the company can currently commit to, driven by AI-related demand. He cited growing needs from autonomous vehicles, robotics and AI-enabled consumer products. The comments came as Micron launched a US research centre in Boise, Idaho, backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade. The facility will focus on advanced memory, computing architectures, packaging and semiconductor manufacturing. Micron has outlined more than $250 billion in planned US manufacturing and research spending. Micron shares climbed nearly 4% on Thursday. The company reported revenue growth of nearly 167% year over year.

Micron to invest $10B in AI memory research lab in Boise over next decade

Micron Technology announced plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade in a new research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, focused on advancing memory technologies and supporting future chip manufacturing. The facility, called Micron Research Labs, will bring together customers, academia, government and the semiconductor industry to pursue technological breakthroughs. The investment builds on Micron's previous $250 billion commitment to US manufacturing and R&D. The lab will connect with Micron's research facilities across the US, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan. Growing AI infrastructure demand has boosted sales for memory chipmakers including Micron, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Micron expects to break ground on the facility in 2027, which will accommodate hundreds of researchers and host international conferences.

Micron, PDD Holdings, and Adobe trade at bargain valuations — but risks remain

Three Nasdaq-100 stocks are trading at unusually low valuations despite their market presence. Micron Technology trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 6.5, compared to the S&P 500 average of 21, though it has surged 660% over the past year. The chip maker faces cyclical market risks as memory shortages may eventually ease. PDD Holdings, owner of the Temu marketplace, trades at a forward P/E just over eight but has declined 26% amid US-China trade tensions and slowing growth. Its revenue rose 11% year-over-year in Q1 2026, down from 131% growth two years prior. Adobe has also dropped 26% over 12 months, trading at a forward P/E of nine. Concerns centre on AI competition potentially disrupting its core photo editing business, though the company posted record revenue of $6.6 billion in Q2, up 13% year-over-year.

US urges allies to choose between American and Chinese tech ecosystems in AI and quantum race

The US-China technology race is intensifying as Washington prepares to urge countries in its AI cooperation network to choose between American and Chinese technology ecosystems. This effort builds on Pax Silica, a US-led initiative securing supply chains for AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals. Against this backdrop, four stocks offer exposure to the emerging US-led advanced-technology ecosystem: NVIDIA and Micron Technology in AI, plus D-Wave Quantum and Rigetti Computing in quantum computing. The International Monetary Fund projects 3% global GDP growth in 2026, with AI-driven demand supporting technology-integrated economies despite broader economic headwinds. The Federal Reserve maintained rates at 3.5%-3.75% on 29 July, citing elevated inflation despite strong productivity and capital investment. NVIDIA remains dominant in AI infrastructure, with first-quarter revenues surging 85% year-over-year. The company guided second-quarter revenues of approximately $91 billion, though the outlook excludes Data Center compute revenues from China.

Cramer backs 4 memory chip stocks despite 200%+ gains, says AI demand breaks boom-bust cycle

Jim Cramer believes four memory chip stocks — Micron, SanDisk, Seagate, and Western Digital — can sustain their rallies despite substantial 2026 gains. The Mad Money host argues these companies have escaped their traditional boom-bust cycles due to persistent AI data centre-driven memory shortages. Micron has gained 242% this year, with gross margin jumping from 39% to 85% year over year. SanDisk leads with a 631% increase, whilst Seagate and Western Digital rose 252% and 202% respectively. Three firms authorised large buybacks: SanDisk at $15.5 billion, Seagate at $5 billion, and Western Digital at $4 billion. Multiyear supply agreements totalling $93.9 billion across eight clients support their improved margins. Cramer acknowledges risks, including potential Samsung capacity increases flooding the market.
