Requirements
  • Technical diploma in Medical Coding and one of the following coding certifications: American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist Physician-Based (CCS-P) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
  • Expectation to obtain an Associate's degree in health information technology within three years of hire
  • Expectation to obtain certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) within three years of hire
  • Two years or 4,000 hours of related work experience
  • Ability to develop and plan instructional strategies and alternative delivery strategies including hybrid, face-to-face and online course delivery
  • Knowledge of current educational methods and strategies, including learner-centered instruction, assessment, evaluation and collaborative techniques addressing closing gaps in student access and achievement
  • Skill in the use of educational technology and alternative delivery methods
  • Knowledge and ability to infuse multicultural perspectives into course content and delivery
  • Skill in communications and human relations with diverse populations
  • Ability to interact with business and industry to establish partnerships
  • Maintain RHIA or RHIT certification
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for instruction in the Medical Coding Specialist program including courses such as Foundations of Health Information Management, Health Care Reimbursement and Management of Coding Services
  • Develop and plan instructional strategies and alternative delivery methods including hybrid, face-to-face and online course delivery
  • Participate in in-service meetings, convocation training, staff development training or other activities requested by the Department
  • Assist and advise students on assignments, tests, grades, course content, career concerns, and other academic matters
  • Comply with college policies regarding testing, record keeping, grading and office hours
  • Maintain competencies as an instructor aligned with the Faculty Quality Assurance System
  • Assist students in developing work experience assignments such as internships, work study, team projects
  • Maintain RHIA or RHIT certification
  • Demonstrate commitment to college mission, vision and values
Desired Qualifications
  • Master of Science or Master’s degree in Health Information Management or related field
  • Experience teaching in a higher education setting
  • Experience with online or hybrid course development and delivery
  • ACD or activity-coded data management experience
  • Knowledge of professional coding standards and ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS coding systems
