Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an approved Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is required.
  • An approved Medical Assistant certification is required, including Certified Medical Assistant from the American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant from American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from the National Healthcare Association, National Certified Medical Assistant from the National Healthcare Association or National Center for Competency Testing, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant from the National Association for Health Professionals.
  • A Medical Assistant without an approved certification must provide proof of completion from an approved educational program and agree to obtain a nationwide or statewide Medical Assistant certification within 12 months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers is required.
  • Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education certification is required.
  • At least 2 years of previous experience is required.
  • Strong, effective communication skills with patients, families, and the clinical team are required.
  • The ability to adapt and demonstrate flexibility in new, different, or changing environments is required.
  • Strong time-management skills to prioritize tasks and act proactively are required.
  • The ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain patient confidentiality is required.
Responsibilities
  • Support patients’ individual needs while respecting their spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices.
  • Establish trusting relationships with patients and families, identify and manage discomforts, and provide emotional support.
  • Prioritize and integrate multiple requests and work expectations by performing tasks safely, professionally, and in a timely manner.
  • Communicate clearly and promptly with patients, families, and appropriate team members, and seek assistance when needed.
  • Participate in unit or clinic programs and meetings and use constructive conflict-resolution skills to contribute to team building.
  • Use available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating pertinent clinical information about diagnoses and treatments.
  • Maintain current clinical-practice knowledge and competencies through continuing education and professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Perform within the clinical scope of practice and follow applicable state, federal, university, and unit standards, protocols, rules, and regulations.
  • Provide and accept focused constructive feedback and guidance.
  • Follow ethical behavior and therapeutic communication standards and protect patient information privacy.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment and examination rooms with required supplies, instruments, and materials.
  • Explain examination procedures and prepare patients for physician care using basic instructions and information.
  • Perform vital signs, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomy, and document findings in the patient’s medical record.
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments while observing sterile-technique principles.
  • Schedule patients for tests and complete required laboratory-work forms.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  • Order, stock, and inventory supplies and assist with clerical duties.
  • Follow university and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard university assets.
  • Medical Assistants 2 working in hospital-based units do not administer medications.
