Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Five years of experience as a stationary engineer is required.
  • A 1st Grade Stationary Engineer City License from the City of Houston is required.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform essential functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • Functional knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing operations; building automation systems; life safety systems; emergency power systems; and structural systems is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of boiler systems and equipment is required, consistent with 1st grade licensing.
  • The ability to operate in a large facility environment and serve as a resource for staff on complex boiler-related equipment is required.
  • Employees may be required to work on call during emergencies.
  • The role may require travel within the Houston metropolitan area.
Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain, and repair fixed hospital building equipment and the Central Utility Plant to meet hospital codes and operational standards while maintaining patient, visitor, and staff comfort and safety.
  • Set operational parameters and monitor and adjust equipment as needed to maintain code compliance, safety, comfort, and energy-management objectives.
  • Provide detailed shift-change information to relief operators, including planned maintenance status, equipment status, and equipment operating outside normal parameters.
  • Coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance with equipment service providers.
  • Conduct periodic equipment readings, record pertinent information for hospital and code requirements, respond to unusual readings and alarms, and inform leadership of actions taken.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and equipment repairs using hospital procedures, manufacturer manuals, proper tools, and appropriate techniques.
  • Operate equipment and building systems to meet operational and code requirements while minimizing energy consumption.
  • Use resources efficiently, manage time independently, and prioritize daily tasks.
  • Assist leadership with selecting new and replacement building systems and equipment that are reliable and energy efficient.
  • Provide guidance and training to maintenance personnel on the operation, maintenance, and repair of operating systems, fixed building equipment, and Central Utility Plant equipment.
  • Assist maintenance staff as needed to meet department needs.
  • Provide high-level training as a subject matter expert and participate in department projects.
  • Participate in in-service programs and continuing education for professional growth and development.
