Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree or 3 years with a Master’s degree is required.
  • Hands-on experience with printed circuit board assemblies, wire harnesses, mechanical assembly, hardware bring-up, and functional or end-of-line testing is required.
  • Proficiency with electrical debugging tools, computer-aided design and drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance analysis, and statistical process qualification methods is required.
  • Demonstrated structured problem solving and effective collaboration across design, quality, test, automation, and production teams is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own electromechanical manufacturing processes from prototype through production ramp, including printed circuit board assemblies, harnesses, sensors, actuators, and integration.
  • Develop and validate functional and end-of-line test systems, including test coverage, limits, instrumentation, and data capture.
  • Design and qualify fixtures, tooling, assembly methods, and production stations for repeatable, ergonomic, mistake-proofed manufacturing.
  • Improve first-pass yield, process capability, cycle time, overall equipment effectiveness, and cost through data-driven root-cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Influence product design through Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and Design for Test to eliminate manufacturing and test risk early.
  • Develop robust machining, assembly, inspection, and validation methods that improve quality, throughput, and repeatability.
  • Drive manufacturing processes from concept through qualified production and partner with design, quality, test, automation, and production teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with printed circuit board assembly manufacturing processes such as surface-mount technology, reflow, conformal coating, potting, and rework.
  • Experience with wire harness manufacturing, including crimping, soldering, overmolding, and continuity or hipot testing.
  • Experience developing processes for robotic hands, compact actuators, or other high-complexity, tight-tolerance electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience building computer-based test software and test data pipelines using Python, LabVIEW, SQL, or an equivalent technology.
  • Experience scaling a low-volume, high-mix process into repeatable higher-volume production using lean manufacturing, line balancing, and automation.

1X is an engineering and robotics company that builds android robots to augment human labor in real-world work settings. The company’s flagship product, EVE, can move through spaces, turn corners, and open doors, using shared autonomy to operate with human guidance as needed. The product relies on specialized actuator systems paired with artificial intelligence to perform tasks that humans would normally do, enabling enterprises to boost productivity and address labor shortages. 1X differentiates itself by commercializing enterprise-ready androids and targeting the US market, leveraging its unique actuator design and AI stack to enable smooth, human-like movements that can navigate real environments. The company’s goal is to provide reliable, scalable robotic helpers that can carry out a range of tasks autonomously or with partial human control, increasing operational efficiency for enterprise customers.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • October 2025 preorders reportedly filled 10,000 units in five days, proving demand.
  • April 2026 Hayward production started at 10,000 units yearly, scaling toward 100,000 by 2027.
  • January 2026 World Model and Redwood improve task learning, supporting broader household use.

What critics are saying

  • Neo’s Expert Mode exposes homes to remote human operators, triggering privacy backlash in 2026.
  • Autonomy remains limited; 1X still needs teleoperators for basic chores like folding and fetching.
  • If 2026 deliveries slip or trust collapses, 1X’s $20,000 home-robot thesis dies.

What makes 1X unique

  • 1X’s Neo targets consumer homes with shared autonomy and teleoperated task completion.
  • 1X combines humanoid hardware, World Model software, and factory production in Hayward, California.
  • OpenAI backing and Kind Humanoid’s 2025 acquisition deepen talent, capital, and Bay Area presence.

$20,000 humanoid robot Neo folds laundry and waters plants — but needs remote human help to work

Robotics company 1X has launched preorders for Neo, billed as the world's first consumer-ready humanoid robot, priced at $20,000 or $499 monthly for a six-month commitment. The 5-foot-6-inch robot can perform household tasks like unloading dishwashers and watering plants, and features a built-in large language model. Neo has a soft body, moves slowly, carries up to 55 pounds, and runs for four hours per charge. However, the robot occasionally falls over and requires significant human assistance. Complex tasks require remote operation by 1X employees wearing VR headsets. The robot features cameras and can be remotely accessed for training purposes. 1X claims privacy safeguards are in place, though concerns remain about having a camera-equipped robot in homes.

OpenAI-backed 1X releases world model to power humanoid robots

Norwegian humanoid robot company 1X, backed by OpenAI, has released a new world model called 1X World Model (1XWM) designed to enhance robots' understanding and reasoning in the physical world. The model generates future videos from text and initial images during inference, then infers robot actions from these predictions. Trained on web videos and limited robot data, 1XWM targets 1X's Neo humanoid robot, currently in mass production for home use. Neo can generate predictive videos and reason about household tasks. However, the company noted the current model requires a dual modelling process for video and action generation and has not yet achieved true zero-shot execution. The development aims to give robots general behavioural capabilities for domestic scenarios.
