Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree or Master's degree as a Physician Assistant is required.
- Graduation from an ARC-PA-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine.
- Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification may be required at the department's discretion.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- The position requires the ability to provide healthcare services within state law, professional licensing or certification requirements, and applicable hospital privileges.
- The position requires proficiency with computers.
- The position requires strong communication skills.
- The position requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization, immediate post-discharge care, and ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds and consultations or pre-procedure evaluations as applicable.
- Participate in perioperative patient care, including first-assisting in the operative suite.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with orthopedic faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests within established clinical guidelines and scope of practice and communicate the results.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in medical records.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized plans of care for orthopedic patients, including teaching, perioperative planning, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex orthopedic care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate orthopedic patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for orthopedic patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate to the area of expertise.
- Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved hospital and UHA policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in orthopedic practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to support creative problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to orthopedic patients and families throughout inpatient, perioperative, and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret orthopedic data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
- Assist orthopedic faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
- Acute care, surgical, or orthopedic experience is preferred.
