Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Nursing required
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred, must obtain within 8 years of hire
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
  • BSN within 8 years of hire at Bronson South Haven and Bronson Battle Creek policy as of 2013
  • BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
  • Critical care or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ALS) as well as other certifications may be required for some Registered Nurses, unit specific
  • Current driver's license in the state of Michigan and proof of insurance required for benefits eligibility
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment to set an appropriate plan of action
  • Must be able to constantly communicate both verbally, in writing and electronically
  • Occasional lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds; push/pull or handle material and equipment
  • The Registered Nurse must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served
Responsibilities
  • The registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients in the organization throughout the length of stay by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation and evaluation; coordinating the care provided by other professionals; delegating selected acts, tasks or functions that fall within the scope of professional nursing practice and the abilities of patient care assistants and universal service assistants; providing selected aspects of physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice as appropriate given the patient's level of acuity and complexity of care required; and documenting and communicating during each tour of duty the patient's response to care provided, consumption of resources and anticipated needs
  • Collect comprehensive data pertinent to the patients’ health or the situation; assess the patient’s physical and developmental needs; analyze assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs; document nursing history and age-appropriate physical/emotional needs/strengths; review vital signs to assess condition and detect deviations from normal
  • Analyze assessment data to determine patient problems; identify problems; confirm problems with patient and family as appropriate; document expected outcomes and plan of care related to problems using clinical pathway and outcome teaching record
  • Develop a plan that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes; incorporate clinical pathways; develop individualized interventions with patient input; consider data from other health care team members
  • Implement the identified plan; administer prescribed medication and treatment; utilize evidence-based interventions; maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs; initiate a patient education plan; coordinate implementation of plan; manage the care plan and delegate interventions; evaluate effectiveness of care
  • Evaluate progress toward attainment of expected outcomes; evaluate effectiveness of planned interventions and patient response; document patient response
  • Participate in quality improvement activities; use results to initiate changes in nursing practice; participate in ongoing educational activities; maintain records of competency and ongoing education; self-evaluation; participate in peer review; collaborate with patient, family, and other health disciplines; integrate ethical provisions and patient autonomy; engage in relationship-centered care; serve as patient advocate; integrate research into practice; consider safety, effectiveness, cost and impact in planning and delivery; delegate tasks based on patient needs; assist patient/family to understand options, costs, risks and benefits; provide leadership in professional practice; participate in nursing councils and unit committees; attend at least 50% of unit staff meetings; create and maintain healthy work environment; responsibilities related to Scrub Registered Nurse including interpreting procedure cards, preparing case carts, anticipating physician needs, monitoring patient condition, updating case information, ensuring equipment availability, performing scrub duties in multiple services; on-call requirements; for HDU on-call requirements beyond regular hours; for Bronson Lakeview and South Haven swing bed training and documentation differences
