Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • At least two years of experience in human services.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with clients and team members.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
  • Ability to lift items weighing 10–20 pounds.
  • An annual tuberculosis test is required.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safe functioning of the shelter and maintain a safe environment for clients.
  • Monitor all calls and inquiries while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Answer crisis calls from the Fairfax County Domestic Violence Hotline and complete safety plans and needs assessments.
  • Update the daily log by documenting all client interactions and other significant shelter events.
  • Work closely with case managers to support and reinforce client service plans and maintain ongoing communication regarding client progress.
  • Accompany clients to court and other appointments to support client goals.
  • Complete shift exchange with incoming and outgoing staff and report daily activities to maintain continuity.
  • Ensure all Shelter House log documentation is completed in compliance with agency best practices.
  • Evaluate and provide for clients’ basic needs while on shift, including distributing household items and toiletries.
  • Maintain the dignity and confidentiality of all clients during service delivery.
  • Maintain current knowledge and ability to administer emergency procedures, including building evacuation, health emergencies, and safety management.
  • Conduct assessments and intakes for clients in imminent danger seeking a safe haven.
  • Assist with the administration and security of medication delivery.
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff training as directed by the supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance with agency policies and best practices.
  • Serve as emergency personnel and report to work as scheduled regardless of inclement weather, highway congestion, or other circumstances.
  • Demonstrate the organization’s values of inclusivity, collaboration, accountability, respect, and empowerment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field.
  • Experience working in programs serving victims of domestic violence.
  • Experience working in a residential environment.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certification.
