Broadcom down 6.2% as Google expands AI chip partnership with Marvell

Broadcom shares fell 6.2% after Google expanded its partnership with Marvell Technology to co-develop additional AI accelerators and controllers. The move signals Google is broadening its AI chip supplier base beyond Broadcom. Simultaneously, Broadcom is exploring debt financing of up to $100 billion to support AI chip deals for Anthropic and other customers. This underscores both its central role in AI infrastructure and mounting financial pressures. Broadcom maintains an existing agreement with Google through 2031. However, the Marvell partnership highlights risks from hyperscalers diversifying suppliers. The massive debt package raises concerns about balance sheet risk, particularly if AI spending from hyperscalers slows whilst Broadcom carries additional leverage from past acquisitions. Investors face uncertainty around customer concentration and rising competition in the AI chip market.

ARK buys Broadcom dip as Google's $12.2B Marvell warrant deal reshapes custom chip landscape

Google announced a custom-chip partnership with Marvell Technology that includes warrants to purchase up to $12.2 billion in Marvell stock. The deal sent Marvell shares up 10% to $237.27, whilst pressuring Broadcom, which fell in Wednesday trading. Broadcom steadied on Thursday at $364.14. The iShares Semiconductor ETF held flat, suggesting the selloff was Broadcom-specific rather than sector-wide. Intel and AMD each fell 1%. ARK Invest purchased 55,548 Broadcom shares during the dip. Broadcom's year-to-date gain of 5% trails Marvell's 180% surge. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan guided Q3 FY2026 AI semiconductor revenue to $16 billion, up over 200% year-on-year, and targeted more than $100 billion in AI semiconductor revenue for fiscal 2027.

Broadcom targets $100B AI chip revenue, eyes $3T market cap to rival Microsoft

Broadcom shares have risen 28% over the past year, outpacing Microsoft's 7% decline. The semiconductor company, currently valued at $1.9 trillion, could join Microsoft in the $3 trillion market cap club. Broadcom's growth is accelerating due to strong AI chip demand. Revenue in the first six months of fiscal 2026 increased 39% year-over-year to $41.5 billion. The company expects an 84% revenue jump in fiscal Q3 to $29.4 billion, driven by AI revenue surging over 200% to $16 billion. Looking ahead, Broadcom projects AI semiconductor revenue exceeding $100 billion in fiscal 2027. Long-term agreements with major tech firms including Anthropic, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, and Google will fuel this growth. The company plans to deploy over 3 gigawatts of AI computing capacity for Anthropic in 2027, up from 1 gigawatt this year.

Broadcom surges 36% in 6 months, outpacing Nvidia on ASIC chip demand

Broadcom has outpaced Nvidia with a 36% return over the past six months, driven by growing demand for custom-made ASIC chips. The semiconductor company produces specialised chips for tech giants including Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Amazon. Broadcom recently reported 48% year-over-year revenue growth in its fiscal 2026 second quarter, with net income nearly doubling. Its AI semiconductor segment grew 143% year over year, faster than Nvidia's 92% data centre revenue growth. Chief executive Hock Tan forecasts AI semiconductor revenue will surge over 200% in the fiscal 2026 third quarter, reaching $16 billion. The company expects total quarterly revenue of $29 billion, representing 84% year-over-year growth. ASIC chips are gaining importance due to their energy efficiency and low latency advantages for AI inference tasks.
